Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Hi. My husband just got a call from 877-803-6009. It was an automated call, which told him there had been recent suspicious activity concerning his ss# and that they needed to issue him another number. He hung up and asked me to look up the phone number to see if it was, in fact, a scam. I haven’t seen any scams associated with this particular number, however Social Security web sites clearly states the phone numbers that they would call from and it is not one of those so????

I have had several calls from "SSA" today (1 866449 8877) saying my SSN will be suspended, they have seen suspicious activity and ask me to verify my last 4 digits of my SSN. I told them no and they said they would transfer me with our local police department who would then further investigate. When they connected me to my local police department I got disconnected. When I call this number, it does say Washington DC Social Security office and it sounds like a real SSA office.

I also received a Robo call from the Social Security administration saying my SS card had been stopped because of suspicious activity. Subject was from India . Said I was under investigation for mail fraud, drug trafficking, having 25 different bank accounts. Said I could pay the legal fees or he would call the police department in my town and they would handle it. Subject very forceful in his manner of speaking, made threats of arrest and jail time. Sounded legit in the beginning and went wrong very quickly.

Another scam May 14, 2019. Got 2 calls today from two diff numbers. Both numbers posing from Washington DC., saying my social security number is suspended as they found suspicious activity. (1-800-772-1031) and (1-202-318-5640). I let them both go to voicemail. I usually get the "warrant for your arrest" ones, so this was a new one for me. I just blocked the numbers.

Received six. . . yes. . .SIX CALLS today from a number that included 888-815-1212. Sent to the call to VM each time because I suspected that it was scammers. The robot left a VM saying that their was suspicious activity on my SS# and to call back immediately to clear my name. Needless to say, I will not call back and I will continue to send the calls to VM. It's important to note that once you answer one of these calls, they will increase in frequency, so try not to answer the calls if you can.

I get numerous scam calls on a daily basis! There are so many different area codes and phone numbers, I don’t write them down anymore. I never answer the phone for a number I don’t recognize and I never engage in a conversation with the scammer. The amount of time these crooks spend scamming other people, they could get a real job!

When I got home yesterday (5/14/19) there was a message saying they were from SSI and I was being investigated for suspicious activity. Also that my SSI was being suspended. It is now 10:34 5/15/19 and have put a call into SSI admin. I decided to check the internet and here I am with many people telling their story. Thank you so much everyone, the relief is profound.
