Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I've been getting spammed by multiple numbers pretending to be from the Social Security. I have not picked up any of these calls but they all left the same exact voice message saying "Press 1, thank you. Your Social security has been suspended due to suspicious activity. Please press 1 for more information" I've blocked at least 4 numbers that are similar except for the last 2 digits. All the numbers (so far) start out as 888-815-17XX .

‭I got two calls and two voicemails (within a 3hour time span) from +1 (202) 165-4825‬ earlier today; May 20, 2019, claiming that my social security number was suspended. (Included transcription of voicemail: “Just press one thank you this call is from the Department of social security administration the reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your Social Security number because we found some suspicious activity so if you want to know about this case just press one thank you…”) I almost called back, but my subconscious kept me from doing so, hinting a likely scam. Thankfully it was caught by Verizon’s call filter and blocked! I’m honestly glad I didn’t try to call back and find out who was on the other end of the line. I’m tired of being on the receiving end of these annoying scams, and hopefully by reporting another number on this website; this prevents someone else from falling victim to these deceptive people!

Just got called second time in a week. The first call was 240-345-9725 the second number today was 781-344-2744. The accent on the phone appeared Asian/ Indian on first call. Multiple people talking in the background call center like. This last message started with a formal message stating "my social security number has been suspended click 1 if I want to hear details. I hung up and reported it here. Please add these phone numbers to the list. Hopefully, the FTC will find a way to protect people from being harassed and scammed. The ISPs should also be looking into this. If these are international callers there must be a way to block and track . The source. Maybe stricter phone number registration screening... not knowing how they are obtaining our phone numbers or the phone numbers they are using to commit fraud over state lines.

I called right back and they hing up on me. I called agian and they answered. It was a foreign lady who wanted my first and last name and they could tell me what was filed under my name. I asked for her id number and she rambled one off. When i wouldnt give her my name and asked why it was a recording when they called the first time she had no answer. She got agitated with me and told me that my information would be given to the local police department and i could check with them. I called back again and a guy answered. Why isn't the government cracking down on the phone system? How is there such a huge security/technology flaw that scammers can spoof phone numbers? The citizens should be suing the phone companies and government for allowing these features to be abused and for all that money they've lost. What is the government doing to control this type of scamming? Can you help us understand how this type of stuff is even possible with the current systems and what is being done to correct them and track down the bad guys?I'm hopeful that this can be fixed. How much business hours and money are being lost for America because of these spam calls?
