Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

On May 15, 2019 at 9:39 AM, I received a call from an unknown-to-me number, so I did NOT answer it. The message seemed to pick up recording midway through because the voice sounded robotic and all the 15 second message said was: "The number to call is 717-628-7847. This is Officer David Walks with the NSA Social Security Administration." I filed a report online with the Federal Trade Commission providing the above details but none of my own. Having just had someone attempt to scam me, the last thing I am going to do is give personal information over the Internet. But, hopefully, the name/number will match other reported scams so they can shut the thief down.

I received a call today saying my SSN# was going to be suspended due to illegal allegations and activities and if I didn’t cooperate with him a warrant for my arrest would be issued within 48hrs. He kept asking me to state my name and SSN# clearly to verify my identity. I asked him for his name and what agency he was from. He gave me a generic name of “Wesley Anderson”, and he had a very heavy and broken Indian accent while speaking English. I asked him to tell me what I had done but he kept telling me if I did not identify myself stating my full name and SSN# I would be arrested within 48hrs. At first I was very alarmed but as the ph call progressed I could tell he was becoming upset or shaken that I would not state all my vital information to him. He said since I would not state my information that he would issue an arrest warrant. He even went as far as to give me a badge #, then hung up the phone on me.

Received two calls today from 682-514-6265. They left voicemails that my SSN was compromised and legal action. As usual, I did not recognize # and did not pick up or return call. However I did do a google search and saw same number and same scam reported. I blocked the number from future calls but am sure they will just use a different # next time.

My elder mother received a VM today about her SSN being suspended unless they hear back from her soon. This got my mom worked up and worried. I told her not to call and filed a FTC complaint. The phone number was 800050790 or something close to that. These scammers go after innocents for their personal gain.

Just received a fraudulent call from 603-677-8269 yesterday and today. He claimed I committed a tax crime and demanded for my social security number. I denied giving it up and he became very angry with me and claimed he would "lose" his job and that time was running out. I just hung the phone up his face. Then I got more bogus robotic voicemails from the same number. This guy has been calling random people all over. Beware!
