Earlier this month, we told you about a growing scam: people pretend to be from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and try to get your Social Security number or your money. That scam is now growing exponentially. To compare: in 2017, we heard from 3,200 people about SSA imposter scams, and those people reported losing nearly $210,000. So far THIS year: more than 35,000 people have reported the scam, and they tell us they’ve lost $10 million.

Here’s what one of those scam calls sound like:

Scammers are saying your Social Security number (SSN) has been suspended because of suspicious activity, or because it’s been involved in a crime. Sometimes, the scammer wants you to confirm your SSN to reactivate it. Sometimes, he’ll say your bank account is about to be seized – but he’ll tell you what to do to keep it safe. (Often, that involves putting your money on gift cards and giving him the codes – which, of course, means that your money is gone.)

Oh, and your caller ID often shows the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213) when these scammers call – but they’re faking that number. It’s not the real SSA calling.

Here's what to know:

  • Your Social Security number is not about to be suspended. You don’t have to verify your number to anyone who calls out of the blue. And your bank accounts are not about to be seized.
  • SSA will never call to threaten your benefits or tell you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards. Anyone who tells you to do those things is a scammer. Every time.
  • The real SSA number is 1-800-772-1213, but scammers are putting that number in the caller ID. If you’re worried about what the caller says, hang up and call 1-800-772-1213 to speak to the real SSA. Even if the wait time is long, confirm with the real SSA before responding to one of these calls.
  • Never give any part of your Social Security number to anyone who contacts you. Or your bank account or credit card number.

If you get one of these calls, tell the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I got a call from (888) 815-1548 to a phone number I seldom give to anyone else, not even Social Security Service. So it's probably a scam as the number they called is a google voice number that I give out to salesmen and craigslist.

It seems I receive at least one scam call per week. And the caller typically has a heavy India accent. But don't worry, help is on the way. FTC along with the phone companies will soon be able to prevent caller ID spoofing. I just hope they hurry it up.

Two calls within 10 minutes of each other. 747-231-2620. Automated message with a guy's voice saying he's from the SS office (Federal Batch ID # ss9165). If they keep calling I'm going to answer and if I get a real person the first thing I'm going to say is that I'm recording the conversation with an officer of the law present and ask for their information. Doubt they'll keep calling me after that.

I have just received a series of 5 calls, on my cell phone from numbers 888.815.552, 888.815.1559 and 888.815.1561. The VM says: my SS# has been breached and is being used by someone. They tell me to "press 1" for help. This is very suspicious. I just tried to call the official SSA phone number but their lines are all busy and I am being asked to call back. I hope that everyone is reporting this to SS.

I think the SS Department should send out a Mass Mailing GIVING THESE EXAMPLES. And most important Recomend after a scam call to Police & FTC. AND advise all who get SS that if they want to contact will be by mail with specific Instructions How to reach SS VIA MAIL. @ HEAD QUARTERS

I got a call saying there is suspicious activity on my account and it's been suspended. I saved the message. It's a recording. They told me to press one. Then I noticed it's not a full number. It was one number short. It doesn't make sense to me. Why would they do this except knowing it's upsetting.

05/18/19 I just got a call from (716) 413-0596. I did not answer the call but listened to the voice mail they left. It was no doubt a robo call, the recording said: "This call is from the department of social security administration, the reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just suspend your social security number because we found some suspicious activity. So if you want to know about this case just press one thank you." Obvious scam, NEVER GIVE OUT ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION OVER THE PHONE, IF OU DON'T RECOGNIZE THE NUMBER DON'T ANSWER IT.
