Scammers are calling people and using the names of two companies everyone knows, Apple and Amazon, to rip people off. Here’s what you need to know about these calls.

In one version of the scam, you get a call and a recorded message that says it’s Amazon. The message says there’s something wrong with your account. It could be a suspicious purchase, a lost package, or an order they can’t fulfill.

In another twist on the scam, you get a recorded message that says there’s been suspicious activity in your Apple iCloud account. In fact, they say your account may have been breached.

In both scenarios, the scammers say you can conveniently press 1 to speak with someone (how nice of them!). Or they give you a phone number to call. Don’t do either. It’s a scam. They’re trying to steal your personal information, like your account password or your credit card number.

If you get an unexpected call or message about a problem with any of your accounts, hang up.

  • Do not press 1 to speak with customer support
  • Do not call a phone number they gave you
  • Do not give out your personal information

If you think there may actually be a problem with one of your accounts, contact the company using a phone number or website you know is real.

Read our article to learn how to block unwanted calls on a mobile phone or on your home phone. And if you do get a call you think is a scam, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I received multiple calls, minutes from each other, from different local numbers. These calls started at 3:30pm EST and are still occurring as I am writing this. They keep leaving the same recorded voicemail stating that it’s Apple & if I would like to return their call to speak to an Apple Support Advisor to call (315) 232-8257. I am getting beyond annoyed with these calls. I have blocked every single number that they have called on, but them calling every 5-10 minutes is getting ridiculous!

We have gotten probably 20 calls this afternoon, from Apple, about cloud. Do not have either one. Did push 1 and asked that we be removed from list that I knew it was scam, they laughed, I hung up and at least 15 calls since, all from different numbers but using the 91-225... I am thinking we will probably get calls alnight. I am so angry that our privacy can be exposed like this

I keep getting calls from local numbers and always the same but the last 4 numbers digits are different each time. It is a robot voice stating that there is something wrong with my $300.00 Amazon order well for one I haven't ordered anything from Amazon in 6 months and I get these calls twice daily they are wanting me to press 1 if I ordered this or 2 if I didn't. NO WAY ! I simply do nothing and hang up and block every call they call from cause like I said its always different local phone number. If it was actual Amazon I do not think they would be calling from a phone number that is local which is from about 10 min from me. I have had problems with an Amazon order before and when I called about it the phone number was never local and they never contact me I always contact them. Since this has been going on I have been checking my amazon account to see if anything funny is going on and nothing. No orders have been placed on my account so yet again we have another scammer and now there doing it here local in my town of Southwest Virginia. SO be careful out there my Amazon friends

I just got a phone Call from Amazon. A recorded message telling me I owe them $799 . I've got a number and it was from Melbourne Australia. I haven't purchased anything from Amazon for quite a while, so I know it's a scam. As soon as I heard the recorded Message, I hung up.

Just received a recorded call. I was told that it was Amazon calling to let me know there was suspicious activity on my account. Pressed 1 to speak to a representative. Was told that someone in Dallas has charged four hundred and some dollars on my account. Asked how i ordered. I said on the phone. Wanted to hook up to my computer in order to correct this. I said I don’t have a computer. They kept repeating they needed to hook up to a computer. They simply hung up! The number they called from is 321-878-9266 and is “no longer in service” seconds afterward!

I contacted Amazon to make sure my account was secure and they told me they would submit complaint.

I just hung up on a call from a supposedly amazon call center. They said they would help me to pay the annual membership fee for 190 something dollars. The regular annual prime membership costs you about 119. And then they led me through a weird sequence to install an app and a weird id and password. I stopped right there. I knew there was something wrong. They ask you to open an internet explorer and ask you to access gg.gg/....02022. What the hack is this!!!!

Just got a call. No I did not do the right thing and hang up. I pressed 1. Seemed to have a good grasp of English....accent not too thick. But a lousy connection that just about immediately got worse started the warning bells ringing. When the call was interrupted to the point of not being able to carry on a conversation I hung up. Not sure what can be gained by my pressing one and 30 seconds to a minute of conversation. No credit card numbers stored/saved in any of my devices anyway

I want to thank you. I received a call from Amazon wanting to authorize a $999 payment for an I-phone. I pressed #1 and was put on hold. While I was on hold, I looked up this site online. After reading it, I just hung up knowing it was a scam. I will now block the number from re-calling. Thank you.

I actually spoke with the customer service after pushing 1, I know I shouldn't. I said I don't have an Amazon account and any fraudulent charges I can talk to my bank about. The guy asked if I knew anyone in Ohio. I said no and he wanted me to confirm I wanted the purchase cancelled. I explained I have no way of knowing he is from Amazon. He confirmed that I didn't believe him and the call abruptly ended. I figure the more stupid conversations they have where they get nothing it might mean they figure this isn't working.

Same as most are saying. I received 8 calls within 1.5 hrs. All different numbers. And a different phone number on top of the number making the calls. The person sounds aggressive. I would imagine if Amazon made a call about a high charge on my card, There would be music or a sound and a voice would say, Amazon, before the high-pressured content is given. Please help stop these calls.

Have received 3 such calls from "Amazon" today. Caller i.d. shows t local numbers, and some even have names to go with them. My Google assistant screens the calls, they leave recorded "a suspicious charge to your account" msg. I never pick up or call back. Went and double-checked my Amazon account to cover all the bases.

So I experienced this call this morning while hiking and I did "press 1" and was connected to someone who repeated the information. He asked me if I had shared my log in information or passwords and then said he would freeze my amazon account for one day, but did not ask for any information from me. Am I vulnerable in some way? Did just by pressing 1 did I reveal something? I'm confused.

In reply to by worried

Same thing happened to me I pressed 2 first and it repeated the message then I pressed 1 and a man answered and a lot of background noise. When I ask if they were Amazon they hung up. Should I be worried that they got into my phone or info?

I received a call about a purchase and did I want to cancel it. They asked me to download anydesk app so it would put me through to security. I said "why can't you connect me to security. I should not have to download an app and felt this was not usual" She got a bit annoyed and said "Mame I haven't asked you for personal details So there is no risk". So I questioned her and refused to download something I know nothing about and she hung up. Be careful everyone, it originally sounds real and they scare you by saying someone had purchased something on your card.

Blocking the scam numbers will do nothing to prevent getting called as the scammers will just use another number. Your best bet is to get a caller ID number identifier that can detect spam calls and will notify you whether or not it is spam call. It won't work 100% of the time, but mine has saved me a lot of grief when it comes to spam calls.

Got a phone call from 907-802-2813 stating that someone placed an order for an iphone and that the account is on hold and I should press 1 to connect to someone. What is funny is that I DON'T even purchase from Amazon let alone have an account with them. How ignorant can you be? I would like to know though where did they get my cellphone number from??
