Image of cupid and heartNot everyone using online dating sites is looking for love. Scammers create fake online profiles using photos of other people — even stolen pictures of real military personnel. They profess their love quickly. And they tug at your heartstrings with made-up stories about how they need money — for emergencies, hospital bills, or travel. Why all of the tricks? They’re looking to steal your money.

As if all that isn’t bad enough, romance scammers are now involving their victims in online bank fraud. Here’s how it works: The scammers set up dating profiles to meet potential victims. After they form a “relationship,” they come up with reasons to ask their love interest to set up a new bank account. The scammers transfer stolen money into the new account, and then tell their victims to wire the money out of the country. Victims think they’re just helping out their soulmate, never realizing they’re aiding and abetting a crime.

Here are some warning signs that an online love interest might be a fake. They ask you to:

  • chat off of the dating site immediately, using personal email, text, or phone
  • wire money using Western Union or Money Gram
  • set up a new bank account

Did you know you can do an image search of your love interest’s photo in your favorite search engine? If you do an image search and the person’s photo appears under several different names, you’re probably dealing with a scammer. And if the person’s online profile disappears a few days after they meet you, that’s another tip-off.

Here’s the real deal: Don’t send money to someone you met online — for any reason. If your online sweetheart asks for money, you can expect it’s a scam.

Unfortunately, online dating scams are all too common. There may be tens of thousands of victims, and only a small fraction report it to the FTC. If this happens to you, please report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

I just started talking with someone on POF. His name is Alex and he claims to be a marine engineer for a cruise line. His picture shows him in an uniform. He says he is 45 and lost parents in a accident and he is the only survivor. Sun of a Brazilian woman and father from Delaware. I found him on Facebook with the name Alex Williams. I think he is a scammer. Could you please let me know if we are talking about the same guy?

I too was asked to send money to an engineer in Dubai. He was divorced and went by the name of Michael Carswell. He only responded by text, phone or email. Very intelligent man. Have gotten several pictures & he has aged in each one. Has said he is a diamond dealer as well. Has a very strong accent. Anyone else heard from him?

Probably was Ryan Gosselin's pictures.I had one send me David Duchovny pics. You might notice most have first names as the last name like, Keith Henry, Robert George etc. My scammer was stuck in Dubai, heck he probably still is. 3 yrs ago, cost me 15,000. I'm messed up for life. I trust no one. He will take all her money and not bat an eye. Anyone calling you babe, my wife, queen, when I see those words I cringe. Do whatever you can to pull her away from this person. We don't even know if its a male or female.

I have been chatting to a guy I met on Mingle dating site. He goes by Eric Andreas and claims to be from Oslo, Norway. He said his wife died at birth of his youngest daughter 7 years ago. Also have two boys age 9 and 10. He has groomed me instantly with profound love. Also calling me names like babies, dear, queen, my love, angel and claimed he wants to make me his wife. He set up a time of one month for us to meet in person and prepare ourselves to know each other more. He has an unknown accent to me. Also claimed to be a Russian orphan with no family ties. My heart really went out to this guy. He claimed to be into gold trading. Buying these by doing trips, shipping it to Oslo and selling it to traders there. He has a very nice profile on Mingle.Looking smart in a suit..with a flashy watch.. Other pictures again very relaxed in bohemian style t-shirt and shorts. Some has him with his dog, others of his children. These all looked like a descent guy. Pictures of all different ages. We mostly used WhatsApp for texting and chatting. He went on his first business trip to Singapore and got me on-board in more details than previous conversations. Things soon went wrong and asked me to wire money using Western union to clear some unexpected taxis he had to pay. I did help even though every bone told me I was being scammed. I just didn't want to belief it. He was coming to see me in England as soon as his gold was shipped to Oslo. Another problem arised and he was asking for more money to get him to clear customs documents. He even let me spoke to this lady at customs in Malaysia and referred to me as his wife that WILL send the money. I'm still in contact but have refused to send more money. I just stick to I don't have anything but need to see how this plays out. This is so crazy.. Has anyone encounter this Eric Andreas guy? His FB page is only 8 months old but has same pictures of him with white background. He also claims happiness and love to be most important thing to live and give for. Please send me a picture if your story correlated with this on.

He requested a friend request from me on facebook. Said he lived in Long Beach NY. Told me his name was Nicolas Alessandro Luigi . He said his wife died and he had a 6 year old daughter named Diana. Told me his daughter was staying in Ohio with his disabled sister. 3 days later he told me he was flying to the UK and from there would be working out on a oil rig. One day he said he was going fishing and while fishing his cell phone fell in the water so now he could only use fb messenger. He asked me to send him I tune cards and Steam cards as well as go to walmart and buy him the new iphone for him. 2 months later he said the drill was not workkng and if he didnt complete the work he would go to jail. He said he needed money 1000.00 to get it fixed but he couldnt get money from his account because his account was locked due to a banking error. He said he was born and raised in Italy. He has workers that will walk off the job if not paid & later needs $ to pay taxes on his final government check from the contract up front & then he's coming straight to you. He says (we) can fix this. He travels in a foreign places and ran short of $ for materisls. His # change because he dropped it off a boat. He Whstsapp but he can see you and you cant see him. He need 2 apple gift cards for something. Next he need this little bit of $ (2-3k) for some other bs so he can come be with you my love and start our beautiful life. He will say he'll pay interest on money you borrow. He will send flowers to keep you going and become intimate over the phone while saying he loves you in the heat of it all...blah blag blah. I'm not even mad because I should've known better. I was just hopeful that he would be t hv answer to my prayers but Satan chimed in. He got me for 15k and thinks hes getting more...be careful. Wao I had something similar. I was talking with a guy his name Dave Wellington stationed in Syria. After 2 months he told me he wanted to show how committed he is to me by sending me a ring that his mom gave to him but he also wanted to send me money that he found buried while in a mission. So he needs my details my address and phone number. I asked him how he gonna send the package he said thru a Red Cross agent or their suppliers. Long short story...what he didn’t know is I have family members in the military so I let him know that... I told him I won’t do that and not to communicate with me again and that I know he was a scammer.

Hi Jennifer, my daughters name is Jennifer to. I am really glad l this site. When l get a gut feeling l know what it’s telling me,but this wonderful sweet loving man,Orlando Marco which l meet on Zoozk dating site. First time I had been on one. And we fell madly in love, o what a foul i am. My husband pasted away 4yrs ago, and felt it was time to move on, he would have wanted me to,. Well Orlando told me he lost his wife in a car accident 4yrs ago they have a daughter 24 and she was in Paris France, going to university. I just asked him today what she was studying, his reply business management, yea right I know l told him that is what l did before retiring, and I sure as hell didn’t have to go to Paris to do that. I took my coarse at Algonquin college, and that is here in Ontario Canada, where l still live, and on his profile it said he lived in Addison, which is about 1/2 hrs from me, like how good does that get. Please forgive me for going on, l am very chatty, can at silly which he LOVED he thought different personalities would go together so good. Hehehehe Because he is a business man in the oil and gas exploration. He even has his own company which took him to South Africa on Thursday June 18th. Then he texted me on Thursday 20th. 2019. So this has happened pretty recently., the first time he messaged me back ( I sent him a like) he said he would like to get to know me better. So this happened May 30th. Asked me to marry him, wanted to know if I wanted yellow or white gold and a diamond wedding ring. I said that Kind of fast l would prefer for him to ask me in person and he agreed. But l forgot to tell you when he sent me this email (l hadn’t replied yet) he sent me a picture of him at TIFFANYS &CO. On his lunch hrs he was going to buy us rings then but thought he should ask me first which l prefer better. That’s why I replied back we should wait. O and he said he was from Florence Italy. So was his dad,his mom was from Tampa Florida USA. Never asked him he came to live in Addison Ontario, then he said he bought a house at Port Sydney Ontario after his wife passed away. Did l tell you he is sooo handsome he has sent me sooo many pictures. He even sent me one when he got off the plane AC when he arrived in Africa. So if anyone of you ladies want to message me back with any questions what ever it would be please me very much, if I am not lonely old lady, and l certainly not stupid. I became suspicious when he asked me to wire transfer 10.000. Thousand dollars to him when he was robbed from a taxi going to a site. They took everything from him. He said he phoned his bank right away when the police took him to the hospital had all his business assets frozen so they could not get into them. O u know he even sent me pictures of his company business account and one of his personal account with the credit Trust Bank at 25 N Muskoka River Rd. Port Sydney. I got that address of his business contract his company and the one from Pretoria South Africa. Signed agreement. . I would love to be able to look u his photo online, not sure how to do that but I will figure it out. So again reply back if u want.

Does anyone know a Patrick waters? Army 18b? I bought him 125 iTunes Gift card and wired him through western Union 200.00 to what he called an agent that his commander assigned to get all the care packages together since the drop had been compromised by a bomb a terrorist had planted and injured some soldiers. The agent was Jamie joshlin from ripley,ms. He never asked me for more money. He said his birthday was May 20, 1983, he was from la, ca, he had been living in Missouri for 7 years this was his last deployment. He was in search of true love because he caught his girlfriend in bed with his best friend. His uncle raised him. His parents died in a car wreck. He hates the beach. He loves books especially the Alamo. He has a two year degree in engineering. He works three days a week when he’s back in Missouri the other days he’s taking care of his uncle and he died recently while on deployment. I have several pictures. We never spoke on the phone or emailed. He couldn’t take current photos because of the cctvs. He had a German Shepherd that he didn’t know was looking after it. He never said he loved me or wanted marriage or kids. He called me baby which I told him not because we never met in person then he would call me honey which I don’t like. He talked about buying a house closer to me since he no longer had an uncle. I asked him what his favorite meal was and he said bacon and eggs. Simple but it’s better than eating out of these packages everyday. He said he couldn’t always text me because he was on patrol or he needed to sleep because Iraq had different hours. I googled his name and nothing comes up, Facebook nothing, his pic nothing, looked For his pic on the scam sites nothing. I searched his cell number it’s a landline in Michigan. Any ideas?

HI ACooper, I have a situation very similar to yours minus me telling him I love him. My guy said he loves me and continues to say it, but I am not there yet and I've told him how I feel about saying "I love you". My guy has hinted that he needs $100 to rent a store where he can continue as a barber. He was working at a barber shop when we met in early December, but the owner decided to give his wife the shop for her use. I am not sure if I should send him the $100, as I do feel terrible if he is unemployed under the conditions in Nigeria. Have you gotten any responses? I am curious to know anyone's advice.

Sounds like my David Rodi, works as marine engineer on oil rig(platform) in Gulf of Mexico. Has lived in CA. Phone is listed in CA. Widow with 25 yr old son. Said owned home in Charlotte, NC. I can't find him by that name and neither could one of the find people businesses. The whole I love you within a week and want us to meet. I'm an older lady texted several times a day, but I noticed he was almost always gone by 7:00 each day. I have not heard from him in 2 days which is very unusual. He tried asking me for Itune card to purchase music. I said would be happy to if you sent me your credit card number, code on back of card and your address. All of a sudden, he was having problems with his CC being hacked and having he is not able to use it. I have continued to go along with this to see where it is going. Not hearing in 2 days is unusual. Oh BTW: His email is gmail not yahoo as most will tell you and his writing is extremely good English. Has never asked me for money. Hope this helps someone else.

I encountered the same story—supposed marine engineer working in Alaska, but on his way to New Zealand. Says he comes from Cleveland. Widower with a 7ish year old son. Ex that dumped him for a rich guy. Says his “mum” was German, and dad from Cleveland. Name Williamsfrancisbetchon. Only chatted the past few days, but seemed to be online nonstop. Eager to be in a relationship. Never spoke with him, but English writing style is not that of US English. Hasn’t asked for anything but when I searched for him, he appeared to be from Georgia; order of his name varied slightly. Same pictures. Told him I’m not interested in a relationship, but persisted. Pretty sure another one contacted me with the same story a few months ago, as martinswelsh or something like that.

I met James Williams on a game site. After a few days he told me that he would be leaving the states, for Mexico, to work on an oil rig, claimed he is a contract engineer, and he asked me if I would consider talking to him using Hangouts. He told me that he was an only child, both of his parents were dead, but that his ex-wife and daughter lived not far from him. He told me that his phone was running low on minutes, and asked if I would buy him a phone card, once he was in Mexico, stating that was his only way of communication, how he sent files to his boss and that the cards were not sold where he was. I purchased him a few cards. Then he asked me to add his daughter to Hangouts. She informed me that her birthday was in a couple of days and that she had asked her dad for a iphone. She then asked me if I would buy her a $100 itunes card. Surprised by her request, I decided to look up 'James Williams scam' and was surprised to find other people had gone thru the same ordeal, by someone (or maybe the same man) using that name! Beware ladies!

Sounds like Marcel Zachary of San Diego, CA. Does he send you photos of himself with a pug dog? Greyish hair that is heavily moussed on top?

My mom, who is 70 years old I've been talking to a guy named Jerry who has a 10 year old daughter named Sharon. He is supposedly in Afghanistan and goes out on patrol everyday and uses that as an excuse as to why he can't talk during certain times. Only talks to my mom on the phone in which the area code is from New York or send her text. Attempted to pay her phone bill for her for her cell phone but payment was rejected and then wanted her to go buy iPhones for everybody and have them sent to New York. I tried to tell her he was going to involve her in some kind of a scam through AT&T with those cell phones and now she has a bill for the activation fee for at least three of them if not more. When she told him she wanted to cut off the relationship she threatened suicide and told her he was going to come here to Oregon to visit her and take her to Washington DC for his supposed retirement ceremony from the military. His name is Jerry L and I found a profile picture of a Jeremy L on Facebook and it was the same picture this guy sent my mom. We have a satellite VA office in the town where I live so I'm going to take her there and have her speak to somebody she will maybe listen to because she sure isn't listening to me. Now she has a $300 and her phone is shut off. I told her to be careful when she first met this guy but she's divorced and lonely and just wants that one last love.
