Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Got a message saying the FBI has an issue with my SS # and they were from SS admin. I called back and a guy answered with a foreign accent stating SS admin asking when I got a call I said 7 min ago and he hung up. Then, I called back and said what happened and some other guy was like, "seriously?" He stated it was SS admin as well. He asked my name but I wanted to know why he called and he hung up.

I get about 5-6 calls a day for SSN scams, all numbers begin with 1-888-815-****, last 4 numbers varying between calls. I hqve blocked at least 30-40 numbers already, but a new one calls every time. It is very annoying.

I just got a call from 207-453-3906 claiming to be from the Social Security Administration and telling me to dial a number because there is a warrant out for my arrest. I scoff, of course, because I know better. But many people don't, and that angers me, because they could get hurt from this type of fraudulent scheme.

I would like to know where they get our number to call, and leave automated voice mails? There is only ONE SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION PHONE NUMBER no matter where you live in the United States, It is the same number, has been the same number for over 30yrs, for all to know it's, 1-800-772-1213. Block those numbers you get from them, anything that doesn't look like a legit number, BLOCK IT!!! And remember this---IF IT WAS SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION OFFICE, they would send you something in the mail, they will not call you, unless you allow them to call you, there will walkways be a letter, and a corresponding name, and a REAL Social Security Administration phone number to reach that Representive phone number, Please forward this to everyone you know, you shouldn't have to be threatened by a stranger that says they are from SOCIAL Security, See the signs, pay attention to strange numbers

Received two calls in the last two days; one from 830-522-4298 and one from 833-822-7538 from "Kelly Jones" saying she is with the "department of social security". She goes on to say the department is filing legal action against me. I hung up and blocked both numbers before the robotic call ended. It seems pretty coincidental that these just started up when I've been filling out employment applications.
