Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

I keep getting a phone call from 321 -622- 2887. Honestly I don’t believe what they are telling me. They’re claiming that there’s “legal enforcement actions filed against you” and based on the voice of whomever is calling it sounds like a bluff. It doesn’t sound like a real person, and it doesn’t sound like your typical automated system. If you’ve ever seen those movies with the killer using those voice modulateurs that’s what that sounds like.

Received a call from 205-782-1802 and left a recorded voicemail stating my social security number has been attached to criminal activity and I must call back or they will be filing this with the federal courthouse and I could face jail time. It sounded suspect, but I called the number back from my work line. It rang to a gentleman with a very thick accent who sounded like he was working in a call center with dozens of other people having phone conversations as well. I asked him to confirm his identity and which branch of the social security administration he was calling from and he refused. He got angry and said he does not have to prove anything to me, so I hung up. Scam, scam, scam.

I received at least three calls from 877-253-4715 in the last two hours. According to google info, this is the number for the SS office in Saco, ME. Maine is a beautiful state.....I just don't live there.....there's been widespread scammers calling in hopes of stealing money from the uniformed. Just know that the SSA will never call you. Not sure the government can help with robocalls because if they were able to help the Do Not Call Registry would work.

Just had one of these scams call me. It was a recording about something regarding illegal activity, but it didn't even finish before it disconnected. I tried calling back, but they wanted me to go through a long message machine process of pressing numbers for extensions, and then wait 15 minutes for a representative to talk to you. I hung up....I've got better things to do. The number is 1-877-876-3171. I wanted to ask them how the weather is in Nigeria. A shame I didn't get a chance.
