Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Well, they are persistent!! I have received no less than 10 calls from five different numbers. All of them start with 888-810-****. I mistakenly called one back when trying to delete, so that might be why, but none-the-less...just delete them. They should go away soon...

I just got a call from Chula Vista CA. I no longer answer any calls from an unrecognized number, but a voice mail message was left. It just said there was fraudulent activity under my name and left a call-back number. It sounded computer generated. There was no name given and no indication if this was a credit card, bank, or government agency. I've had problems with credit card and SSA fraud already and this NOT how it was handled. I got calls, emails and/or text that identified who was calling and from where. I suspected this was a scam. I googled the number (619 -373-8415) and found it on this FTC fraud alert site, confirming my suspicion. I did not call back.

I got the same call and i did not lift it to let it go to my VM. The VM was "as soon as you hear this message call the number before any legal list of actions taken on you". I called back that number from a different phone, and i hear "this is social security administration" may i know the number we called you at? My response was "you should have my number" as you called me. The response i heard was to disclose my actual number which i didn't and i was told that legal action will be taken. I replied, do whatever you can, i don't care.

On 5/1/19, I received a recorded call saying that the caller was the "Social Security Administration" and that they needed to talk to me. They gave this number: 224-433-7895. This call was received less than an hour after a different call saying that my wages would be seized and my tax number terminated because I had failed to take action on unreported income....etc. That caller did not announce herself as the IRS but that's what I was expected to imagine. I don't know if the calls are linked but this was the second day in a row I received the fake IRS call.

Just received a phone call from 356-895-4212 telling me that the government wanted to give me some astronomical amount of money (over $1,000,000) so I told the guy "uh, I don't believe so. That's a lie." (Of course, I knew the minute he started speaking it was a scam). Anyway, he assured me it wasn't so I told him to please hold on while I get my husband so he can talk to him. I yell "Hey, honey, come down here. I need you to talk to someone on the phone." Then, I said to the scammer "he'll be here in just a second. He's a police officer and" ......hmmm. Guess he didn't want to a police officer. He hung up! HA HA HA (

I got several robo-calls claiming that fraud had been detected related to my SSN, and that it was going to be permanently blocked (which would cause loss of access to and social benefits). They said the only way to avoid this would be to connect to a representative of Legal-Tel by pressing 1. I hung up but I'm sure they'd have been fishing for my SSN and any other personal info they could find.
