Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Scammers called with a recording to me claiming they blocked my social security number. Asked me to press 1 to speak to their legal department. FAKE and a terrible SCAM. Their caller ID number was 866-004-1213. I blocked them and didn't push any numbers.

Just received a call from 866-020-1213 with a recording telling me there is fraudulent activity on my SS # and to press 1 to speak with a SS administrator. If I didn't connect immediately all of my SS information and benefits would be frozen and a warrant issued for my arrest. I receive a couple of calls a week from different numbers all claiming some compromise to my SS# and if I don't immediately press 1 or call them back I will be arrested. They are all recordings, never actual people. Any actual government agency is not calling your cell with a recording and threatening you with arrest. These scams are terrible. And annoying.

Today they called me out of Texas, saying that SSN is already suspended, and that someone pull out of the Wells Fargo in Texas 35.000$ and deposited that money in Columbia. I do have Wells Fargo, over the phone they sounded really professional, and I did the biggiest mistake ever, I gave them my full social security number and told them that I live in IL not in Texas. What should I do now?

I have received several calls from (209)883-6281. The caller has a very heavy Indian accent, as do all his co-workers (you can hear lots of talking in the call center). He says he is Officer Daniel w/Social Security and they allegedly found suspicious activity on my SS#. I just let him go on his rant, and he gave me a fake Case ID number and says they are turning this over to FBI. Claims someone rented a car in my name & it was found in Texas w/2 lbs cocaine in it and I am going to be prosecuted for money laundering & cocaine possession. But if I help him by giving him enough info for him to authenticate that he is talking to the right person, he will cancel my arrest warrant. "Wait, what??? I can get out of cocaine possession & money laundering if I just give you my DOB, SS#, address, and bank account number? Well no wonder we have so many drug problems! But hold on, I thought you already had all my info because you are with Social Security so you already know all that, right?" He told me I was going to go to "incarcerations in non-bail jail" for 9 years and have an $89,000 fine unless I give him the info he needs to assist the Dept of Treasury in this investigation (which of course is SS#, bank account info, DOB, & address). What is even more frustrating is that the blog above gives a phone # to report this to the SSA, but of course you cannot get a person on the phone so I have no way to report it.

Same thing happened to me yesterday I got a call from a Ben Watson he provided me with a case number and an employers number ! He then informed me that my SSN number has been involved in suspicious activity and that it would be suspended with all benefits as well! He then proceeded me to tell me I have a warrant out on me ‘ when I tried asking questions he got impatient he would not give a clear indicator to what was exactly the issue. After a few minutes he then said I can see your not going to listen so the United States marshals office would take me into custody! Sadly at first he caught me off guard! I had just gotten home from the hospital and was still kinda out of it from the meds they had me on! So when he first provided me info that seemed legitimate I confirmed only my last 4 digits which I now know was a complete mistake it’s definitily a scam ! I called the marshals office and was assured they don’t use their services for that kind of Crime! I also had the marshal run my info to be safe and of course their was no record of any kind. After careful research if I would have stayed on the phone with them somewhere during the conversation I’m certain they would have asked for the rest of my number plus more then likely asked me to get some type of cash card to to give to them over the Phone then after providing them that info my warrent would Be Cleared and my SSN number would be reactivated! Plzz don’t give them any information they have ways of spoofing legitimate numbers which lures the intended victim into a false sense of security’ according to the SSA Admin they don’t contact ppl this way and make threats or ask for money! And in no way would your SSN number ever get blocked or suspended! I howl this helps someone.

I received a similar threatening call I believe it was last year. I posted that number. Others had posted the same number. This time it was a woman threatening me "Call back or be denied benefits". I just wanted to add a new number to this website. This time it is 325-216-0647 and most numbers above are all different. This is my second time, just don't answer! The first time I was crying and so upset the man told me it was a joke. Social Security contacts you by mail as far as I know. Please be careful! Hope I can help.

I don’t answer unknown numbers. This one left a voicemail that’s automated stating that there was unusual activity with the use of my SS number and my SS is now frozen until I contact them to verify my information at this number ‭+1 (426) 288-4243‬. I’ve had several of these calls from different numbers that I block all the time! This is why I don’t answer unknown numbers.

Call was initiated by a computer with the following message: “Due to suspicious activities with your Social Security Number we are suspending your benefits and cancellig your Social Security Number. In order to resolve this matter and to speak to a Social Security Agent, press 1 on your key pad”. Being aware of this scam, I pressed 1 then a live person with “Indian Accent” responded and said, “How may I help you”. I shouted and cursed him he immediately hung up.

I received several missed calls from (888) 651-3068 & (888)709-5115 leaving voicemails saying they were the SSA with an urgent legal matter. I called the number back and the receiving end sounded loud like a freakin sweatshop in Mumbai. Instantly I was suspicious. The woman I spoke too said she was with the SSA. She informed me someone was fraudulently using my SS# in Texas to rent cars and a car with my name attached to the registration was apprehended with cocaine inside. She read off arrest warrants and case #s to me. She said I was wanted by the US MARSHALS, she told me my SS# had been suspended, my bank accounts were being frozen .She said I was “in big trouble and facing jail time”. I said FOR WHAT?!? Bring law inforcement to my house right now. I don’t even live in Texas. .. She gave me SO many details (something that also told me this was weird) when I told her all this sounded outlandish and I wanted to speak to a supervisor or someone in law inforcement she said she would transfer my call but first she needed my SS#. I refused. She hung up. DO NOT, EVER, GIVE OUT YOUR INFO TO PEOPLE. NEVER!!

Please check out this number: (760) 362-8044. I keep getting voice mails on my cell phone claiming they are from ssa and that a fraudulent claim had been filed on it and that they will take legal action against me if I ignore the message. Funny that I never heard from the administration themselves by snail mail and they even directly deposited my disability benefits no questions asked just a 3 days ago, as scheduled like clock work. All of my medicare hmo claims are submitted by SCAN Health Plan and neither of us would ever have any reason, whatsoever, to submit fraudulent claims. Furthermore, some requests from my primary care physician to see certain specialists get denied as my medical group doesn't deem them as medically necessary. If any outsider made any such attempts to tap into my medicare or disability, I never heard about it.

The person who answered the phone asked me to confirm my name, which I did, and he had my current home address. He said he had some affidavits from Texas that my SSAN was involved in a criminal complaint and he asked me to confirm my SSAN. I said that if he was with Social Security, he should read my number to me and I’d confirm whether it was correct. He said that if I didn’t believe he was with SSA, I should hang up, which I did.
