Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

My wife got a call from 844-769-8933. Went to voice mail, computerized voice claiming she had committed fraud and that a warrant had been issued for her arrest. Supposed to call Social Security at 844-769-8933. I reported it to FTC Online. I'm sure the number is coming from overseas and that they used the computerized voice to hide that fact.

Caller ID comes up as "Scam Likely" so good for that. The number the electronic recorded message says to call is 339-900-8613 and says that they are the Social Security Administration and that they're calling for, get this, suspected fraudulent activity involving my social security number. Ha! That's rich coming from a phone scammer. I just went ahead and blocked the number. But they continue to call 2 to 3 times a day and keep leaving pre-recorded messages on my voicemail.

Have received a prerecorded phone call from an "Officer Ryan Smith" (calling from the Department of Social Security [pause] Administration) regarding a criminal file on my social security number. First time I called back later in the day and the phone number didn't work. I received another call and called back just now, man asked for my name, and I gave him a slightly different name. He asked if I was using my middle name, so he did have some information on me. He said he would look for my file, and then after a short hold, hung up. He had a thick accent, my impression was that it was from India or Pakistan, and when I called back I heard many people in the background with similar accents. Caller ID was:V31312004900209 and 1-916-352-3537 The other day it was: Caller ID was:V31118115800209 and 1-916-352-3537 It was the same person each time. The person who answered was the same voice as the pre-recorded call.

Earlier I got a caller that left a message, said there was fraud on my Social Security, that I needed to call back. I checked the number online first, found that it was a scammer number, so I didn't call. I just got a call from the US Government, so I answered the call but hung up with I heard the caller stutter & talk with very broken English. I think if I was in some sort of trouble with the US Government, I would get a letter in the US Mail telling me so.

Rec several calls from 928.377.4876, some went to voicemail, others recorded messages talking so fast I could hardly understand. I called the # back and they too spoke in a heavy accent. She demanded I get a piece of paper and a pen, then proceeded to give me her full name and employee #. The employee # was US13628, as if the US made it more official!! Claimed there was fraudulent and criminal activity on my SS#, and the FBI was going to have to investigate me. I started laughing when she said FBI and criminal because I knew it was BS. She got very angry, told me it was no laughing matter, she was going to freeze my # in the next 2 weeks. The FBI would take over from there. NEVER, EVER, EVER give ANYONE ANY info about yourself. No familys' names, birthdates, banks, account #s,, balances and definately NOT your SS#. Make an online fraud report at oig.ssa.gov/report if you can't get through on the fraud hotline.

Got one of these calls today, had a bit of fun with it. After I told them off, and they hung up. I called the number back and got the speal about it being the SS office, and grabbed a sound bit of a airhorn and BLASTED it into the mouthpiece for as long as they stayed on the line. I proceeded to do this several more times in a row, until they stopped answering the phone. I THEN used my cell and my husband's cell and did the same thing HAHA. Made me feel AMAZING!

That sounds like a scam. Did the person who called tell you to send money, or ask for more personal information? Scammers often try to scare you into sending money immediately, or giving up personal information so they can commit identity theft. They use technology to hide the number they're really calling from, so you can't be sure where they really are. Don't send money or give personal information.

Someone from the Social Security administration might call you if you applied for Medicare benefits or had ongoing business with the Social Security administration, but your FAFSA application doesn't go to the Social Security administration.

You might want to check to be sure your FAFSA got to the right office, and wasn't sent to a wrong fax number. If you sent the FAFSA to the wrong fax number and think someone might misuse your personal information, go to www.IdentityTheft.gov and read about What to do if your information is lost or stolen.

My husband received a call and was told his SS# had been hacked and a car purchased in his name. It was found in Houston TX with 22 pounds of cocaine in it, in addition to other receipts for items using his credit card etc., and if he didn't cooperate there would be law enforcement at his door to arrest him and take him immediately to prison. The caller gave a name and badge number and also said he owed $85,000 in back taxes and had to pay immediately or again he would be arrested and put in prison. To make it sound even more legit, the woman transferred him to a man who spoke very broken English and he made similar threats. My husband hung up and called me. We called (an AARP scam hotline) and reported it and they confirmed it was a scam. It was very threatening.
