Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Just received a recorded message from 281 299 0232 saying there was illegal activity going on with my social security and that I had to call immediately or charges would be pressed against me. I returned the call and a person answered social security with a heavy accent. I told them I was reporting the number because social security will not call and they hung up immediately. I called them back and they told me that it was a mistake because I live in new york but I was shocked when he said my name.

I got a fraudulent phone call from someone calling from phone number 920-122-2123, and they left a voice message for me. The first sentence of the voice message is "SSA is filing a lawsuit against you" and they asked me to call back. I just ignored the call and reported this caller as a spam caller using https://complaints.donotcall.gov/complaint/complaintcheck.aspx

Received a call today from phone # 800-713-0071. The man stated I had been under investigation thru Social Security, was found to have provided fraudulent information to S.S. and a warrant had been issued for my arrest. He then gave me another number to call and speak with S.S. Fraud Dept. stating they need to verify my correct information in order to see me in person to serve warrant. I didn't write down the correct # to call so I tried calling the number back that had previously called me. Recording was all I got. I contacted the REAL S.S. representative who stated this was a total scam, that S.S. would NEVER call like that as its a form of harassment of the disabled and elderly people on S.S. She informed me to contact the Office of Inspector General and report this and be sure to provide them with the number that called me. I am in UTTER SHOCK.

I just received a fairly convincing call that my SS number had been used in identity theft to obtain credit cards, and that the person who did that used my name, bought a car which was used to traffic drugs in South Florida. It was found abandoned on a (hwy identified), had blood on the drivers seat. They said credit cards with my name were found in the vehicle and that I was wanted and would be ordered to appear in this criminal matter. The car was registered to an address that was also abandoned but 10kg of cocaine was found in that house. The person had an ID Badge number from SS and when I challenged his legitimacy he offered to call back from the SSA main Number. I asked why the SSA was handling drug related criminal matters as opposed to the FBI or the DEA? And since the SSA knows all about me, why weren't they contacting me at my home instead of on my cell phone? The person then hung up.
