Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

I just got a robo call stating that a social security number has been suspended. It didn't address me by name. There are 3 people that live at my address, so obviously that is suspect. It said to press 1 to continue. I simply just hung up. The number that called is 866.994.2518. Just hang up, and block these numbers if you can.

1-888-352-5543. This number called and left a message that my social security number got hacked or something so I needed to call them back so they can take a legal action. I called right back and a person requested my SSN. I said, I need to know who you are first, and then this person gave me a badge ID GR3689844 from social security administration dept. I said well, that badge number doesn't mean anything to me, when I googled this phone number nothing came up, that means something, and the person hung up.

I typed in social security administration into google along with a number where I saw it was a scam. When I told him that I just did this, he hung up on me.

I have been receiving harassing calls from this number: +19565670222. It is a automated message with female voice who claims to be Officer Kelly Jones of Social Security Administration. The message advised my SSN was linked to criminal activity and if I did not return a call to the above number, they would begin legal proceedings and my SSN would be suspended. I have received this call on the day of 04/09/2019 several times and decided to call them back urging for them to cease calling me because I was aware that they were a scammer. I couls barely make out what the gentleman on the line said when he answered the phone as the call was very fuzzy and he made a middle eastern accent. I informes him that if I continued to get these calls, I would take legal action to which he could only say "Very funny" then immediately hang up.

April 11, 2019
This morning I got an automated message on my voicemail from the "SSA regarding my case and to call back 657-317-9063." I immediately called back bc I recently found out I won my disability case and thought they were calling to find out how to deposit my benefits. However when I called back, a man with a middle eastern accent answered identifying himself as being with the SSA. He asked for my name and case number, but when I told him there was no case number left in the message, he tried to confirm my info. He got my name and age correct but I knew it was a scam when he tried to verify my address and I hadn't lived there for almost a year. So then when I said, "If you really were with the SSA you would have my current address on file bc you have mailed me information to it." So then he tried asking what the address was and I just hung up. Sounded like the same guy using the IRS scam and government grant scam. So ridiculous and shame on them for trying to swindle people out of their hard earned benefits.

Received a call . Told me to call 1 800 118 1213, my SS was being fraudulently used, and unless I responded, my benefits would be suspended. Called ssa, @ 1800 772-1213(note how similar) and verified the call was the only fraud being directed at me. Beware, your aging parent can fall for this scheme. Let as many know as possible, s's office writes, does not call, and does not shut off benefits.
