Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

December 11, 2019 12:50pm I just received a call and recorded voice message from 469-663-4023 claiming it would be the last call to inform me that my social security number was going to be suspended within 24 hours for illegal and suspicious activity in Texas. The message asked me to press 1 to connect with a social security officer and also gave the above mentioned number for me to call back. SCAM! Now they need to keep their promise and NOT call me again!

I've received about 5-6 calls so far today from a 410 area code number with a female robot sounding voice telling me my social security number has been suspended. I'm not going to call them back but just wanted to post this in case anyone else is looking to see if this is legit... it sounds like a scammer.

Received call from 281-307-8756 then from 281-059-9729 robocall states this is officer Mandy Barnes from the social Security Administration and there has been fraudulent activity found in Texas on your social security number and to press 1 to speak to an officer. I did and the woman could not speak English. I told them to stop calling this number because I had already notified the social security Administration of this scam call and they hung up. I researched and the call came from United States and one from Texas. Beware and do not fall prey to this scam.

2105918443 phone number associated with Dayton, OH called me today and left a voicemail in my phone saying my SSN was suspended for suspicious activity and there will be a lawsuit against me. It was a computer non-human pre-recorded message. Seems like a scam, sounds like a scam. Just thought of also reporting it in this website. I’m sorry for elderly people who might fall for this. I live in Michigan.

SS compromised…

Hi. Please be aware social security scammers if you received a number 1866-289-7489 and there was a short brief message left on the vm , " this is the social security administration office..." which may sound professional. First attempt to call back the 1888 number, there was no answer (quiet monotone) and I disconnected (which was sounded very obvious). 2nd attempt to call back a live person picked the phone immediately (if you listened to the background noise- you can hear other people chattering like a customer service call center). The person on the line speaks with broken English (MiddleEastern/Indian), attempted to collect and falsely verify last four digits of the ss# and name, then states, "your social security number has been compromised and this is a warning to let you know how serious this is, the call will be recorded and passed on to the authorities if you do not agree". I interupted him (Steven Thompson id# 260791-ssa) to tell him, " no , I do not give you any right to record and use the message, I would like to investigate further more and research if this is correct because I did not receive any document/letters from the Social Security's office regarding to a compromise...." and he interrupted me- screamed at me, "LISTEN HEAR, I am trying to HELP YOU!!!!" I replied back to him, "You do not speak to a U.S. Citizen, or customers or yell at customers...this is unprofessional and inappropriate". He replied, "YOU DID NOT LISTEN TO ME!!!!" (This is where I felt that this was truly a scam because I googled SSA number and called, which there was a process where you dial a number to get to an operator. Please be aware and report to the SSA office for further concerns. But the response on the line how the person spoke was a big red flag even if you do not go through the automation phone service. Best of Luck and be safe!

Getting calls from SSI-Dynata using 630 area code. Dynata has added SSI- to Dynata. If the same, Dynata.com comes up from Plano, TX so why are they using 630 area codes? Options to opt out by phone or email where you give them your email and your phone number -- that will work, don't you think?

I have received a call from - 800-314-6508 and they told me that my SSN have been compromised and its being used in suspicious activity. Then they connected me to so called - "legal cell social security administration" number. The call got transferred to a person named Victor with badge number - 02840195. Somehow he already knew my age and then he was asking my last 4 digits of SSN which made me feel like its a scam call then i have asked for there authenticity, He asked me to google "ssa headquateroperational status" and ask me to click on a website like - www. ssa. gov /hqalert/ It seems like a scam. I haven't provided them any details of mine. I would like to request SSN administration to take necessary action against these scammers, If you need proof I have the whole recording of call that i can provide.

I have received calls from this number 850-397-8387 on (3) different occasions in the past week... Here is the automated message they leave on my voicemail every time: This is the Department of the Social Security Administration. My federal batch ID number is SSA9165. The purpose of this call is regarding an enforcement action which has been executed by the US Treasury Department against your name. Ignoring this will be an intentional attempt to avoid initial appearance before the magistrate judge or exempted jury for a federal criminal offense so before this matter goes to federal claims court house or before you get arrested. Kindly call us back on our number which is 850-397-8387. I repeat it's 850-397-8387. Thanks! Unfortunately, that is not the only number to call and leave me messages pertaining to my SS# though. In the last year, I have received dozens of these calls all from different numbers but thankfully I'm able to save them in my saved voicemail file for future reference... I have added more numbers and the script of the voicemail left with each one below. Hopefully, it will help other people who receive similar calls know they are a scam and not to give out their information. 240-230-3300: Your social security number has been selected for fraudulent activities. So once you get this message kindly call us back as soon as possible on our number. Before we begin with the legal proceedings against you. That is 240-230-3300. I repeat 240-230-3300. Thank you! 774-757-0577: This message is to inform you that there are legal enforcement actions filed against you and your social security number has been suspected for fraudulent activities. So once you get this message kindly call us back as soon as possible or press one to speak to our investigating officer. Call back number is 774-757-0577. I repeat 774-757-0577. Thank you! 682-777-3331: Your social security number for fraudulent activity. So when you get this message kindly call us back on our hotline number 682-777-3331. I repeat that is 682-777-3331. If you disregard this notice and do not return the call then we will begin with the legal proceedings against you. Thank You!
