Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Rec'd a call from "Susan" claiming to be from Soc Sec. 215/597-1951. Another call from 215/597-5657 was labeled "scam likely" by my cell phone. Did not return either call. Seems odd to get these just after I applied for Soc Sec.

I have been receiving upto 5 calls a day from someone claiming to be SSA and said criminal activity has been filed against my benefits. They are automated calls and say that you have to call back. 866 240 8455 and 855 355 3338. I call back and a very heavy accented man answers the phone. He knows my name and address. How do I check to see if they are trying to access my benefits?

I called 352-703-4732 and posed a lot of questions so they blocked me. I called from another line and asked why they blocked me so they blocked me again. I posted their number on social media to have my friends call. I don't think they will keep that number any longer....

I received a call from 1 800 500 0879 and a recording went off saying "due to suspicious activity your social security number has been blocked. Your social security benefits and all other transactions have been blocked on this social security number." Press 1 to talk to a representative. I pressed 1 and a male voice answered saying "Social Security administration" and asked for my name. I said I need your name first, then he asked do you speak any languages other than English. I said I spoke English. Then he asked if I was someone giving some name, I said no, and he hung up. Since this looked like a scam directed at ignorant people, I thought of reporting it here. Thank you.

12/2/2019 I have received a phone call I suspect to be a scam, claiming to be SSA office. The woman informed me that my social security number was used in Mexico. Just received a call from 210-943-3211 with a robo voice informing me of fraud on my social security number. Since this is a well-known scam, I pressed 1 to be connected to someone. Have received 4 automated calls today telling me my ss# had been fraudulent. The number calling is the same number 903-304-0083 and they use a horrible computerized voice with the same message. "This message is from the Department of Social Security Administration to inform you that your social has been found suspicious under criminal activities before we proceed with this matter in Courthouse. Get back to us on our department number nine months. I repeat 903-304-0083."

I've received numerous calls from (959) 206-6162 over the last 3 months. What's different with this robocall is it leaves a message. "Social Administration, number to reach department is (959) 206-6162, I repeat..." I've blocked other 959 numbers, but within a week or two a new variation of a 959 area code comes in with the same kind of message. This scam is a huge nuisance and waste of time!

I got a call this afternoon from 204-526-1027. The caller claimed to be from Social Security and said my SSN had been compromised and I needed to confer with a police officer. I then spoke with a man who had an Indian or Pakistani accent and I hung up when I heard his accent. I called the number to check on it. The man who answered had an African accent and claimed that I had reached the "prescription room" of Riverside Hospital. This is clearly a scam, and this phone number needs to be investigated and shut down.

They were calling from numbers in my area code, not knowing that I know no one in that code. Then they started calling from a "Private number" and asking my ex wife who is on social security disability to call a number because "I'm contacting you to discuss a matter that has been forward[sic] to my office for consideration of legal action. Including the filing of a lawsuit and/or complaint with the court. To discuss this[sic] pending actions that may be filed against you, you will need to contact the firm directly handling your file. Their number is (323) 552-7162." etc...
