Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

I just received a call from 210-429-7388. The voicemail stated that there was action against me from the SSA and I may be arrested. Curious, I called back & got a male with strong Eastern accent. He asked my reason for calling and said I am returning a call, and he hung up on me. Red Flag #1. I called back to verify that it was not an accidental disconnect and he wanted to know how recent I had received this call. Red Flag #2. He carried on to ask for my name, address and SSN so he could find my case file. I explained how I haven’t received any paperwork regarding a case against me and would like to see mail first then I would call SSA and verify. He sounded confused. Flag #3. He finally said ok to sending some mail, but neglected to ask for my address as he had not yet been able to pull up my case file! Red Flag #4.

Social Security Scam call using 800-578-8226. Recorded message (foreign accent) requesting you stay on the line due to an urgent issue with your SS # and when someone with same accent picks up, I asked, "Is this the United States Social Security Department?" and they hung up. How can these type of "companies" do what they do and get away with it?

I received two phone calls this morning from (516) 399-3063. I didn't answer either calls, so they left a message the second time they called. It was a robocall advising me that the call was from the SSA, and they needed to speak with me as soon as possible. They repeated the call back number twice. I went to the ssa.gov website to find the number to call my local office to see if they indeed were trying to contact me. Before anyone came on the line, I heard an automated message about folks reporting scam calls from the "SSA", and they advised either calling (800) 269-0271 or going to oig.ssa.gov/report. "Great" I thought, however, when I called the number it was automated with a bunch of rigamarole, and the website seemed to cater to reporting fraud or abuse of SS benefits. I gave up!

Use caution when this number calls you, 213-634-3122. It starts off by saying your SS# has been involved with fraudulent activity please call us back immediately. The Social Security Administration does not have a live operator answering calls, you will have to go through several prompts prior to getting an operator. Nor do they ever investigate fraudulent activity on your behalf!!!

Received a phone call from 916-310-2687, claiming to be a representative at the SSA. When I dug further they told me that a car was found near the Texas border with blood in it and that the car had been rented by me. They said the FBI asked them to reach out to me and confirm my identity. Needless to say, they didn't get anywhere and they were very crafty in how they approached it. They commented on specific banks to see if I would bite and said they were calling from the Texas SSA.

I've gotten at least 3 calls today (possibly a missed 4th) from different local numbers. A robotic woman's voice says "My name is Officer Amanda Barns. Your social security number has been used fraudulently in Texas South Border. Please press 1 to speak to an officer". I'm at this point tempted to press 1 so that I can keep the fraudster on the phone for a while and irritate them as much as they are irritating me.

I have been dealing with these calls for 2 yrs. I actually have engaged in conversation with these people with Indian accents. They say fraudulent activity is happening with my social security card & there's a warrant out for my arrest. I know it's fake I tell them its fake and they need to remove my number immediately. At that point they begin cussing me out. Today they are calling every hour..new tactic if u call back number gets rerouted to another business unbeknownst to that company. Or it says the line is disconnected. With regulations lifted so are our protections.

This scam is still going strong. I received a call from 800-669-6270. A recorded message advised that my SSN had been used to commit fraud and that they would be shutting it down. The message directed me to press one for additional info. A live person answered and when I asked for her information, she asked me for my name. I told her that she was nothing but a fraudster and that she needed to rethink her life. She told me to have a good day and hung up. At least she was polite!

I recently received a call from number ‭+1 (316) 122-5597‬, and intimated voice said my Social Security has been suspended and there is a warrant out for my arrest. When an actual person came on he asked me for my information. I questioned him. “ you called me, don’t you have my information?” He instantly hung up. I can see how someone who doesn’t know any better can fall into this scam. When they told me about a warrant for my arrest, It shook me and I am glad that I figured it out and not allow my fear to fall for the nonsense.... be safe and stay alert.

Just left this information on the oig.ssa.gov/report website: I received a voice message from 210-446-3290 telling me that there is legal enforcement action on my ssn and to contact them before the case goes to court or I get arrested. I contacted them and they asked for my case number (of which there was none left on my voicemail). Then they asked for my name and zip code. When they couldn't find me in their database they asked for my SSN. I declined to provide them with my SSN for concern that this was fradulent. The person said they were Office Mary Hayden, SSA7897 and the office was located at 3438 E. ______ in San Antonio, TX. I continued to refuse to give them my SSN. I asked if there was a federal telephone number I could call to verify they weren't scammers and she sent me to 202-324-3000 which is allegedly a number in Washington DC. Instead I called the 1-800-772-1213 number and that message directed me to this website. Crossing my fingers this was a scam.

This just happened to me as well. He wanted my information, but I said "there are a lot of people that live here, which one's SSN is being frozen?" and he said he could only tell me that when I identified myself. Not suspicious at all... Same 202 phone number provided when I asked for it. I was told to ask for "David Drawgins" when I called that number. Obviously a scam, as I asked which D.C. SSA office he was calling from and he said "the big one".

I received a robocall from 210-294-9189 San Antonio, TX, telling me that my SS# was suspected of fraud. Obviously the robocall gives it away that it's not real. I do know that the SS administration would not robocall anyone. They only send letters. Please make sure people know this number is a scam. I did not call them back.
