Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

I received a call from 915-233-2304 (El Paso, Tx). It was an automated voice stating they were an officer with the Social Security Administration and that my Social Security # has been used in criminal and fraudulent events and to Press 1 to speak with officer Jennifer Cascor. Out of curiosity I pressed 1 and "officer Jennifer Cascor" came on the phone and even gave a badge #. She said I had a warrant out for my arrest for money laundering, drug trafficking, and numerous bank accounts and credit cards associated with my SS#. They even went as far as having someone pretend to call me from my local police department and state that if I wanted all of this to go away and not be arrested I would have to give up my old SS # and they would issue me a new one and I would have to give them my bank information so they can make sure that it is not associated with my old SS# anymore. When the "police officer" asked me if I had anything to say I stated....."Yes, I know this is a scam and if you contact me again I .... " that is when the officer hung up on me.....how rude! LOL. There is no limit to how far these people will go to get your personal information. Please, be careful!

I received a call today from 1-866-526-9874 saying there's a warrant for my arrest due to my social security number being misused and a fraud complaint was filled against me and I am to press one to talk to an officer. It was left on my voicemail and when I went to call back using the number listed above the call wouldn't go through. All I could hear was a few high pitched whistles. So I decided to look the number up on line and it brought me here. So worrisome that others live to take advantage of other people. It's unfair and scary to say the very least. I am still going to call the social security administration to make them aware of this situation and to ease my mind as well. I'm thankful for this site being available and for all the helpful comments other people have left.
