Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Got a call today, from NOT PROVIDED 844 426 5325 didn't have the volume up on voicemail but could tell the caller had an accent of some sort, like the others, said my SSN was compromised and, of course, call them back at that number and give them my SSN. Yeah, ok. SCAM, and if I knew where to report it I would, like to the real SS agency.

Repeated calls from 855-287-4793; When I finally answered one, first there was a female voice (recorded message) saying something about fraudulent usage detected, then a foreign sounding man came on, barely understandable, and said "Thanks for calling the Social Security Administration" - to which I replied "You called me" after that I couldn't understand what he was saying but had my answer (scam) so I hung up.

I have had about 15 calls today, most of them from different phone numbers claiming to be from Social Security and the last one saying a suspension notice has been received from the Federal Crime Investigation Department to suspend my Social Security Card and they need to talk to me immediately. The earlier calls today just said I needed to call the given number immediately. The last number they called from was !-800=940-3370. It's been the same voice on every call whether from Texas, New York, Conneticut or New Hampshire. I was told by a person who worked for SS that they would never call for info.

I got a phone call while at work from (713) 258-7861 and the caller left a robo voicemail that stated "This is the Social Security. Kindly call back at 713-258-7861 before we begin legal proceedings." The message ended with the machine saying "have a nice day" but it froze at have "Have a..." then pronounced the letters N and I then finished as "ice day". I called the number back and they wouldn't say who they were but asked for my information. There was a significant amount of noise and a bizarre mechanical tonal noise in the background. Hung up without providing any information.

Here is the latest 806-256-6977 from Texas. This is a voicemail transcript with some awkward grammar: "The reason we are trying to contact you is just to notify that we are proceeding ahead with some legal enforcement actions against you as there is a legal lawsuit filed on your name as your social information is being involved in some fraudulent activities. So as soon as you get this message kindly call back at the earliest possible time on our number before we begin with the legal proceedings that is 806-256-6977. I repeat 806-256-6977. Thank you and have a nice day. If you wish to speak with our executive then press one now..."
