Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Just got a call from 206-450-8710 saying they are from the SS ADMIN and I have a warrant for my arrest for fraudulent activity and please hold to speak to a police officer.. so I held and he said (in a foreign voice) yes you have a warrant.. I said what’s my name? he hung up!! I knew it was a scam because I do not partake in fraudulent activity! And they don’t call you to tell you you have a warrant AND “hold to speak to a police officer” is ridiculous!

302-367-1211 This is a variation of the numbers that keep calling. I actually answered an there was a person who told me that my SS was put on hold because I owed them money????? I told her she was lying and that I was reporting the number to the FTC. She tried to convince me I was wrong and I explained that the SSA would never call or e-mail. There would be contact through a certified letter. She then started swearing at me in Spanish. Why can't we figure out how to catch and punish these people?

I have received numerous scam calls from the 830 area code (830-8222945, 830-1789968) that leave voice messages claiming to be from Social Security, that my benefits have been stopped due to fraudulent activity and to call them immediately. I know SS never makes phone calls like these. I log into my on line account to check my status.

I received a call from (210) 463-4419 which sounded like a pre-recorded message with regards to there being legal action against my social security number. It said to call back to that number, which is not linked to any official business or building. Do not fall for said scam.

I just received a recorded computerized message from 830-316-4786, claiming that my SSN had suspicious activity reported and so it is temporarily suspended....and that I needed to call them back to reinstate it. Totally a scam! The government does NOT suspend social security numbers! Do NOT fall for ANY calls from anyone who claims to be from the SS Office. They do not call. Never give out ANY information over the phone or in an email, online, etc. unless YOU contact the Social Security Administration yourself!

I just got a phone call from 7-800-597-7447." We have been forced to suspend your social security number with immediate effect. Your social will be blocked permanently." This is scary, but after reading the comments, SSA does not call! They send letters and they schedule appointments to meet with you.

I just listened to a voicemail from 1-844-565-8921, from the "Department of Social Security Administration." That should be a dead giveaway right there -- Social Security is not a department. "The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that we just 'suspend' your Social Security number because we found some suspicious activity..." I knew it was a scammer as soon as I started listening to the voicemail. I just wish everybody would have the presence of mind to know a scam when they hear it. I called the number back just for giggles and got this recording: "The number you dialed has been changed, disconnected, or is no longer in service..."

I got a robocall phone call at 12:45 am claiming it was Officer Alex something and saying my SS# had feaudulant activity. They gave me another number to call, but being it was nearly 1am, I didnt get that number written down. The call came from supposed number 1-844-728-6903. The name used was 1800 service. This has got to stop. They've even found a way around nomorobo, clearly. My elderly Mother is in the hospital so this call at that time was particularly alarming. I cannot believe nobody can come up with a way to block these gadgets that impersonate other numbers.

However, I needed to contact the Social Security Administration at (a number was repeated twice; however, the call kept fading in and out. I believe it was the same number as was on my caller ID.) If I didn't not respond, my social security number would be frozen.

August 6, 2020 at 9:20 am (PDT) I received a voice message from 281-720-5223, Jersey Village, Texas. The voice message was: "..the call. We are trying to reach you to let you know that your Social Security Number has been used from some kind of fraudulent activities in the South Border of Texas. So please in order go ahead get more information. To speak with officer press one. I repeat press one. Thank you and have a great day." The voice sounded like a computer generated voice. The syntax of the message is not that of a native English speaker. The reference to "fraudulent activities in the South Border of Texas" is an obvious ploy to play upon the fears of people who believe in an immigrant invasion.

Here's another scam. 336 443 9246 The SSA back is 336-443-9246. The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that there's a legal enforcement action filed on your social security number for fraudulent activity so before this matter goes to the state court house and before you get arrested if you.

These guys figure a certain percentage of calls even though small will generate money or information. So if you have the time waste their time you may be saving someone from a scam. Do not give the information but ask a lot of questions. By the end most of them are very frustrated and a few get mad but it has become a game with me.

What did I have to say about it. I laughed and said "your fraud" and you better never call my phone again. I hung up. This needs to be stopped. I am worried now about Identity theft.
