Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Wed., 7/17/2019, 12:45 PM (PDT). Received a recorded message telephone call from (Caller ID) 646-877-0746. Message purported to be from U.S. Social Security Administration stated that "my" social security number had been suspended due to suspected fraudulent or suspicious activity and to "press 1" to be connected with a Social Security Agent to obtain more information and attempt to resolve the matter. I disconnected and filed an on-line FTC "Do Not Call" fraud complaint report.

This is not a valid number and basically SSA does not really want you to report the number. All they want is for you to turn in someone committing fraud - not fraud against you. Please take down this information

I answered the call from 410-770-2933 and they stated they were from the Social Security Administration, the guy spouted off a badge ID number, spoke broken English - I let him go on for a while and advised I wasn't going to provide any personal information as I was skeptical as to the validity of the call and asked for a number to call back. That is when he threaten to disable my SSN with in 5 min. I sternly advised that I doubted he was capable of doing so and just threatening to do so was illegal and stated that if he was from the Social Security Administration then he would know that I investigate insurance fraud for a living. He hung up on me, lol

Why do we keep referring to these thieves with the "soft" title of scammers. They are indeed thieves. The fact that they didn't knock us over the head does not mean that they are less than criminals. They are thieves, liars and bullies. They prey on anyone they can. Were the thieves that stole all the Equifax information, and continue to steal with it, ever caught? Didn't think so. It's really too bad that we can't actually catch and convict the actual perpetrators of these crimes. I've been receiving these "scam" calls for years now. Due to my employment, I have to answer calls from all over and can't screen as I would like to. If we want the ability to use the electronic conveniences that we have, it seems we also pay the price of being potential victims to every thief savvy enough to find us. Just today received the "Social Security" "freeze my SS number" call. In the past have gotten numerous calls, the "Income Tax, Federal Marshalls are coming for you" call, I have reported scam attempts to the FCC, Local Police, State and anywhere else that I have been directed to that "supposedly" had some jurisdiction to act against scammers. The ultimate answer is that there seems to be no real way to catch these people. They are either in a foreign country where we have no jurisdiction or they are clever enough to hide their location/identity. I had a group of college kids from Scottsdale, AZ attempt to scam me out of several thousand dollars to supposedly "recover" money from Google that I was due. They wanted me to send them 3 thousand to recover 20plus thousand that was in an account under my business name. I went so far as to purchase a cashiers check, then proceeded to send them the "receipt" for the check, meanwhile I had contacted the police in Scottsdale, who already knew this scam was happening. I sent the receipt to keep the contact going in an effort to assist the police. When the scammers received the receipt, they immediately called me to tell me I had sent the wrong part. I claimed to be elderly and scatterbrained and that I would certainly re-post immediately. Long story short, even with all of the contact and police knowing the group involved, they were never caught and charged. ( I did not send the cashiers check and re-deposited in my account) I have reported several scammers to the FCC, filled out full reports, given details of numbers, websites, times, etc.. All to no avail. There are simply not enough resources available to those of us "scammed" to receive help or justice. Unless the amount of the Theft ( and it is indeed theft ) is in the many tens of thousands of dollars, there is no legal system available with the resources to follow up and truely assist us. The anonymity provided by the internet works in favor of these thieves.

I just received a phone call from "Medicare Pros"..they stated that Social Security has some new plans etc etc and all I need to do is take a few minutes to give them the information to see if I qualify. I told her that I thought Medicare, SS, Medicaid and ll government companies wrote letters instead of calling and I do not know if she is who she says she is. She stated she is from Medicare Pros representing Medicare. I told her unless I have proof positive she is from SS I will not give out any information. She started to argue with me so I hung up. Tried calling SS/Medicare and couldn't get through for all the questions they wanted me to answer . IS there a company called Medicare Pro in my area that is calling about this new plan SS has.??

I received a call from 800-933-2447. The call stated that my SS# had been compromised. The person on the other end gave me the name David Miller with Badget ID 105-962. I ask for my name to pull up my record, which I did not provide. The guy tried really hard to fake his accent but when I asked him to spell his name which he did but had trouble the letters I, V, L, and R. I asked him to repeat his name many times until he got tired and moved to asked for my info. After explaining that they should have my records because they called me, he decided to end the call. I have dealt with calls like this in the past. Please be careful with the information you share.
