Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

I received an automated call (1-833-201-7424) stating this was the SSA's final attempt to contact me and if I do not return their call at the said number they were going to take legal actions. When I returned their call, a gentleman with a heavy accent answered and I inquired as to his name (David Cooper) and SSA employee ID (GS6869) as well as the office location; he willingly provided the information. However, when I asked how was I to know if this in fact was a legitimate call from SSA he told me to contact my local agency and hung up on me. I returned the call and was immediately connected to another gentleman with a heavy accent (Craig Miller/Employee ID JQ7225). I asked them what my local agency's contact number was and they asked for my SSN which I did not provide. Do not provide your information whatsoever. I informed him that I was going to report them to law enforcement.

Then the message said to stay online for me to speak with someone about this. I pressed 1 and some lady answered and asked how she could help out. Her English was not good. English was not her first language. It was a bad connection and then she hung up after I said I was recording the conversation.

Just received a call, June 26, 2018 stating that fraudulent activity was detected with my SS account, and to call this number (786-209-3467) as soon as possible to avoid legal action against me. The man answered "Social Security Administration, may I have the reason for your call," in a heavy accent. After describing that I was responding to a message on my phone, he asked if the local police had called me about this issue, I said "No, but I'm calling them right now". I know it is phishing, and am reporting it to SSA and the FTC. Ever vigilant!

Breezie, why did you omit pre-teens from your list of relatives who ought to be notified? It's seems that pre-teens would be more vulnerable to the tactics of scammers than the other age groups that you mentioned.

Keep getting called about my credit card and how I have excellent credit and I qualify for 0 percent interest. When questioned, they said they didn’t have my account number but was only given my phone number. Asked what company they were from. Said it pretty fast, but I believe he (Daniel) said he was from Credit Card Lenders. He hung up want I started to ask another question.. They change the numbers and must have a thousand plus because it sounded like the same person.. I am getting sick of these calls..
