Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

I received a phone call from someone claiming to be a Social Security Administration (SSA) employee. When the phone call took place, an automated voice message informed me that my Social Security Number (SSN) was compromised. The automated voice message instructed me to press the number 1 to hear the case information. After pressing 1, a man was impersonating an employee from the Social Security Office and he was trying to obtain my Social Security Number for whatever scam he was trying to run. The phone number that the man was using to contact me with was (510)-112-7902. The area code for the number that was used by him was from Contra Costa County in the state of California. The legitimate Social Security Office in that county is Walnut Creek Social Security Offices and their phone number was different from the scam artist. With that aside, I don't live in the state of California and it appeared as if the man was trying to steal peoples personal information. The phone call took place July 15, 2019.

The number 807 207 5367 ("Scam Likely) has called me at least 5 times before I blocked the number, but alerts keep popping up on my phone that I have a voice message from that number (but I dont know if it is a glitch or not). All of them are the same, a robo-call saying that my S.S number is being suspended due to suspicious activity linked to it. Its honestly getting seriously annoying, and I'm really hoping that my phone is just glitching and that this scam has not called me 8 times today.

I got a call from 800-685-3928 looking for my daughter because her social security number had been stolen and was being used for identity fraud south of the border. The caller, who had a heavy hispanic accent, claimed to be Officer Mark Watson, Badge number 918248 from San Antonia TX. He even provided a case number. He then demanded my social security number and date of birth and a request to suspend my social security number. Needless to say no information was provided. I called Social Security and a fraud report was filed.

I have received four calls in the last 24 hours from 877-512-3848. You don't even have to say hello and the message starts saying they are from the IRS and your social security number has been suspended or some bull along those lines. They say to press 1 to discuss it with an agent at which point I just hang up. I am sooooooo tempted to play along and waste their time but not sure pressing anything is a good idea so I don't.

Received call today from 866-887-8997 & didn’t pick it up. They left VM. To avoid legal consequences...... I knew it was a scam. Called back & got an automated response - Thank you for calling the Saint Tammany Social Security. Saint Tammany Parish is in Louisiana. I’m not even in the remote area of there! The recording sounded very official saying that if you believe this may be a fraud call to call the SS office & gave a number and to go to the SS.gov website. I can understand how someone make think it’s legit because it sounds that way. I know better than to give out information. So - this number is definitely a SCAM Beware.
