Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

I received a phone call from 800-682-4422. Since it was an unknown number I left it go straight to my voicemail. The automatic voice did not identify itself, nor provide any information about where it was calling from. Just displayed a scamming message claiming that my SS account and all my benefits were frozen until I contact them back and provide my personal information. Be aware of the 800-682-4422 number as it likely is a scam.

I Received a call, 8/8/19 @1:36pm from 1-209-318-3919 (Oakdale Ca) I only answered because I was expecting a call from a job interview and wasn't sure if this was the one. A woman says "she noticed I recently called the Social Security Office to verify my application". Well right there i knew that wasn't true, I had got a letter from Social Security concerning my application over a month & 1/2 ago and I knew this was a lie! I immediately hung up and blocked the number. Plus, Social Security Office number would not be a 1-209 **** coming from oakdale as if it was a private number. Scammers!!

I received a call from 805-387-6589, telling me there are unusual heavy activities on my social security number and Inneed to contact them immediately. Failure to call wilm result in legal offenses. The contact number changed but the stern, serious robot recorded voice is the same as is the message. Only once did a a live person call and I never give my information. In fact, I always tell them I have a friend in the social security fraud office and they have put something on my line to listen to my calls in an attempt to catch the criminals. In 2019 ot doesnt take much to trace a call and it is at that poi t she hi g up.

Have been receiving daily calls in the past week or so regarding my SSN account and legal issues with it. Today was different, being an Indian voice trying to be English or American saying he is with law enforcement and I'm going to be arrested if I don't immediately call 315-284-5306. I found the number on line assigned to a specific person, but did not (I'm learning) dial back. This has really got to stop. What do older people or people not aware of weaponized scams against individuals do? Where is our protection? Isn't fraud related to federal (SS) services a federal crime?

I received 2 calls in a row today saying it was from the Social Security Administration + they are filing a lawsuit against me for fraudulent activity + that I should call them back at 213 444 2430. The call came from Los Angeles, Ca. I did not call them back. The same computerized woman's voice has called me before, months ago, saying there was a warrant for my arrest + to call them immediately. I know I have no warrants against me, so I did not call back.

Just got a voicemail supposedly from the Department of Social Security administration telling me that my ssn has been suspended due to suspicious activity and to press 1 to learn about the case. The caller ID just shows “United States” and the number is (588) 711-7843. I know it’s a scam because 588 is an area code from Mexico.
