Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Received a scam phone call to contact Social Security at a 301 Maryland number. The message was that my social security was being suspended due to a fraudulent use by a scammer. This is a scam as no social security office is at 301 area code.

210-742-6728 call me and I missed the call, when I'm calling back and warning that they are going to suspend my SSN because of some tax issues, they have the non-US accent and very radical to push me to say my last 4 digits of SSN. Be aware of that number.

We received three robo calls this afternoon telling us our Social Security number was going to be suspended and the FBI was investigating. One call went to voice mail. I will not call them back (410-834-0558 and 979-276-6745) for fear of receiving more calls like this.

It's kind of sad this scam still goes on but if they weren't successful, it wouldn't continue. I received 2 calls today from 2 different #'s both with the same robotic female voice notifying me that my # was used in a fraudulent way in another state. 707-710-0485 was one # and the other 575-927-3780. I'm sure the list of #'s will grow as this scam continues.

Get at least 4 scams every day it's really annoying. I have to avoid phone calls that are not in my contact because if you pick it up more scams are going to call you. Important phone calls, like jobs and school stuff, will have to go through voice mail. Do these people feel any guilt on how miserable and inconvenience they are causing? Please, do something about these crazy scammers.

I received a call at my work from the Social Security Administration (209-500-4195) stating there's a issue with my social security number. I'm in Pennsylvania and he called a commercial number... He stated his name (sergeant Nelson) in a heavy foreign accent. Said his employee ID badge number was SSM ID (social security member) 0872 and asked my name. I said you tell me. If there's an issue you'd have it. I asked what city he was based in before he hung up! Yep, scam.
