Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Received a robo-call today from the "SSA". Suspiciously, I called the number back and Randall answered. Asked for my name, which I did not provide. The phone number he called from was 210-489-1650. I asked if you where he was located and he replied, "Randall." Scams on scams on scams.

I received numerous calls from 210-489-1661 it is from a TX number. I tried calling back various times but it said the line was busy . I finally had someone answer the phone. The person answering said he was from the Social Security administration office and his name was Officer Peter. He had a strong Indian accent. I hung the phone up. Earlier I had numerous voice messages from this number saying they I had legal enforcement activity filed against my Social Security number with fraudulent activity it said it was time sensitive , and if I did not called back I would be convicted and go to jail. It was a robotic voice message.

I received a ph call from 1-800-202-4277 about the social security. Didn't pick up the phone because was busy and it told me that my SS# is being suspended. And it didn't allow me to re-open it. Asked me to press number 1 to speak with the representative to release the suspension.

I've been contacted 3 times by an automated system (1-800-236-3113) asking me to press 1 to talk to an Social Security Agent otherwise my Social will be cancelled. I did not answer this call, and they let me a message every time. I'm expecting the Social Security Agency to reach me via mail (not email, not SMS and not via an automated system) hope I'm right.

I cannot believe it! I finally received one. Nice computer generated voice from 800-540-0892, same story as the other 500 commits here. Freeze my SS benefits.... hit 1 to speak... Little do they know, that even if they were real, I will not give my information over the phone. I even had to make an extra trips to the bank and the hospital because I do not give my SSN, DL, or even DOB over the phone. If this had been real, I would have drove to the local SSA office to resolve it.

I just got a call from ‭+1 (800) 039-6043‬ saying my social security has been suspended due to suspicious activity. I knew right away it was a scam. The machine told me to press number 1 to talk to an “ssa officer” so I did. As soon as they picked up the lady on the phone said “hello how can I help you” and I Said well you called me how can I help you?” Then she asked for my name and date of birth to pull up my file & social security. I told her she was a scam and as soon as I said that she hung up. By the way I didn’t give her any of my information. She sounded Indian too.

My 4th call this week was from a scammer using a scammed 800 phone number from Roto Rooter. Officer Oscar Lee (middle eastern accent) ID: 8229AL. Said my car a Toyota Corolla (not mine) was recovered in El Paso TX. It has 25 pounds of cocaine in it. He said they still have the cocaine! Said I wired $240,000 from my bank account to someone. Said my SSN is suspended. He wanted my full SSN. I just played along with him, asking him questions about his name, location, and how I could get the 25 lbs of cocaine (LOL). My goal when I get these calls is to get them to hang up on me. It worked!

430-247-6361 belongs to Vonage. Vonage would provide the IP address where they sent calls made to this number if requested by law enforcement.

"MULTIPLE CALLS DAILY!!!" Although I do not answer any calls from numbers I do not recognize with a firm belief if it is a legitimate call attempt then the caller will absolutely leave a message including a contact number that has NOT already "been disconnected"! All our spare time, (which is already very limited as it is), all the stress & aggravation, all the concerns & worries, and the constant need to remain suspicious over every unknown number!!! It is so exhausting!!! Why can't these calls be stopped and the scammers caught? With such amazing technology WHY hasn't there been a permanent stop created? Even more irritating when it is all occurring on a cellular number since we no longer have land line!

Received call from 704-671-3594 claiming that my SS number is being fraudulently used in southern Texas and I need to speak to a representative about it. I pressed #1 to speak to a representative and some a person with a foreign accent came on. I told him he's going to be in so much trouble for what he's doing . He hung up. I tried to report the call to the SSA Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, but waited forever so had to hang up. There were several callers in front of me.
