Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Just recv'd a robocall supposedly from the SSA that my SS # was suspended as it was used for fraudulent activity on the Texas border. Wasn't even from a complete # as caller ID read 80062637. Sure, I'll select #1 to talk w/a rep ... NOT. Really getting sick & tired of these type of calls

It is 11:43 AM Arizona time. I received a call from the phone number 516-148-2760. It was a robo call. The recording had a male voice, with somewhat of an accent. He said he was with the SSA and because of suspicious activity, my social security number had been suspended. Then he added if I would like to find out about this activity, press 1 now. I just listened, and didn't say or press anything. The message repeated, then the caller hung up. I know they target elderly people, because they are most often the population receiving social security. They are sometimes scared easily, not knowing that the call is a scam. Please let anyone you know who is receiving social security, especially if they are elderly, let them know about these scams, and not to give anyone personal, or financial information over the phone, unless they have made the call themselves. Nobody else from the government is going to call them generally, or at least, if they do, they should leave a phone number to call them back on.

In the past week I have had 3 phone calls from 3 different 800 #'s. 1-800-874-0569, 1-800-668-2806, 1-800-312-3075. I have not answered the calls. All three left the same voicemail: "Due to legal enforcement actions filed on your SS# for a fraudulent activities to get more information about this case file and arrest warrant from federal database to speak with agent press 1 for further information." Is this legit or one of the scams?

I received a call from someone that said they were from the so security office and claiming that my so security was compromised and they were going to discontinue it. The phone number that came from my collar ID was 1 800 308- 4022 . I call the social security office they gave me a phone number to call to report it and that's was nightmare line you just keep going through different options which has nothing to do with reporting it from the phone and then when you finally get to the right options it gives you a website in tells you to go to the website. I guess they really don't wanna hear about these type of fraud because they would make it a little bit better to get the information out. IF you get any of these calls telling you that you're so security has been compromised and that they are going to cancel it hang up on these calls they are fraud.
