Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

It is your choice whether to submit a comment. If you do, you must create a user name, or we will not post your comment. The Federal Trade Commission Act authorizes this information collection for purposes of managing online comments. Comments and user names are part of the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) public records system, and user names also are part of the FTC’s computer user records system. Just scammed by Indian sounding woman, SSA investigator, they found a car at the border of TX with blood and cocaine in it. The car was registered in my name with 2 addresses. They checked one address and found lots of cocaine. Going to change my SSN. ? Hung up. Looked up the telephone # (401) 965-4241. If with (844) first on the page is SSA. She was very convincing.

I received a call today from 443-530-0168 saying that my social security number has been suspended. It was a recording. Sounded incredibly suspicious and I of course, didn't respond. I figured obviously if there was a real issue I would not be notified through an automated system. Please be very careful of these calls!

I’ve gotten around four calls from 800-206-3813 claiming that a case has been filed with three government agencies (The Financial Trade Commission, Better Business Bureau, and the Financial Crime Investigation Network), which doesn’t even make sense because the BBB isn’t affiliated with any government agency and I don’t think the FCIN is even real. Anyways, it rants off a case number and says to press one to be connected to someone if I think this is a mistake, this is in a voicemail message. And the recording doesn’t even wait to start until the beep because the first part of the sentence isn’t on the voicemail. It seems pretty ridiculous all in all.

Received call from 1-800-232-5977. They left a message... I didn't listen to all of it. They claimed illegal activity, Indiana State Department of Veteran Affairs, Social Security compromised. I stopped the message and my phone began acting up. I'm in no way connected to Indiana and therefore felt the need to disregard, but I thought I should at least post regarding the number.

First I received an email claiming to be from the ssa.gov and directing me to "ask for Melissa Firpo. The telephone number is 877-772-3794 ext.34587". I called and left just my name and phone number but not my SS#. The callback came from (510) 970-4137 and the caller glitched just a tiny bit when leaving her name and her contact. People are usually fluid when they state their name and the company they are calling from. I determined it is a scam. I never called them back.

510-970-2545 is a legit Social Security called-ID number for our processing center in Richmond, CA. The employee will give you his/her direct phone number to call back in the voicemail, usually 510-970-XXXX.

Received this gem. The issue at hand is extremely time sensitive. The number for you to call. The SSA back is 978-401-4630. The reason you have received this phone call from our department is to inform you that there's a legal enforcement action filed on your social security number for fraudulent activities. So before this matter goes to the state court house, and before you get arrested, if you need any information or have any question, kindly call us back at 978-401-4630. Thank you.
