Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

I have been receiving calls for quite sometime and letting them know SS office does not contact anyone. So today I decided to play along and see what scam they had for me. Rick Deb, badge #02840195, case #DMC701089 claims my information (in which I did not verify) is involved in illegal activities. "Rick" stated that money is being transferred in my name from MX to Columbia and Cocaine as well as other powder substance have been found. He ask me about two address and asked does my family or friends live there after i told him I didn't know those addresses. After a while I looked up the US Marshall Number and told him I was going to call. He said no I am from the SS Admin office. I said "I know, but you said the US Marshalls office in El Paso, TX provided you my info". So as I was reading off the address he hung up. This is a shame that they actually believe this still works.

I have been getting harassed by a person claiming to be from the Social Security Administration, stating there has been fraud with my social security number. The number that keeps calling is 202-953-7317. The person has a very thick Indian accent. They sound so legit, it's scary to think some people may fall for it.

got a call from 210 807 3460 saying that my SS number was used for fraud activity and they needed me to call contact them immediately before court hearings and an investigation begins. Robotic voice. Freaked me out a bit cause my driver's license and passport were stolen out of my car several months ago but then I saw all the results about fraud on the internet so that made me feel better. Did not call or speak to them - they left me a message...after 5pm.

This number 832-780-5991 have been calling me pretending to be social security administration and saying that they are an officer and want to talk to me about my social security number because it is about to be deactivated. When I told them I was going to call social security he said ok fine but they need to ask me some questions first and social security will not be able to tell me anything because they are working with the local police.

I received a phone call from (443)384 -1921 today and did not pick up. The voice message said the 'Department' has initiated legal action under my SSN and asked me to call back. I did, and was connected to a woman who claimed her name was 'Hailey Melton'. She told me to get a pen and put down my case ID and Warrant #. Case ID is DC7010. Warrant #: 53-7542. I asked her what it was about. She said someone used my SSN to rent cars and to launder money for drug trafficking from Mexico to Texas! She asked for the last four digits of my SSN and my zip code, and if I would cooperate with the 'Treasury Department' on the investigation underway. Right there I said I was sorry I had to leave and hung up the phone.

I received two calls this morning about an hour apart which began the same way: "This is Officer Maria of the SSA. There is a problem with your social security account. Please remain on the line." The first call at 7a.m. I simply hung up. The second call at 8:15 a.m. I decided to remain on the line. The agent connected a few seconds later and and asked me for my name and business. I said: "you called me. You ought to know who I am and why you called me." She said: "I have to have your name so I can look you up in our files." I replied: "you called me, therefore you have my phone number. If you have my phone number, you have my name. Since you do not, I must assume you called me randomly and have no legitimate business with me. This call must be a matter of fraud. Goodbye." I hung up. I am not sure what I resent more, the fact they think I would be stupid enough to fall for this routine or the fact that they messed up my entire day by upsetting me this early in the morning.
