Your Social Security number is an important key for an identity thief. Scammers want it, and they think of all sorts of ways to trick you into giving it away.

Here at the Federal Trade Commission, we’re getting reports about calls from scammers claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. They say there’s been a computer problem, and they need to confirm your Social Security number.

Other people have told us that they have come across spoof websites that look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card – but these websites are actually a setup to steal your personal information.

If you get a phone call or are directed to a website other than ssa.gov that is claiming to be associated with the Social Security Administration, don’t respond. It’s most likely a scam.

Here’s some tips to deal with these government imposters:

  • Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information – like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number – unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.
  • Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code – so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.
  • Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warning about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.

If you come across one of these scams, please report it to the Social Security Administration’s Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271, or 1-866-501-2101(TTY), and then tell the FTC about it.

Just got a call from “Officer” Kevin Matthews saying my ssn was involved in suspicious activity in TX and asking if I had “misplaced my identity.” Was very open about offering up his name and employee number to try to seem valid. Came from a spoofed local number that called ID identified as “wireless caller”.

I received three calls today from three different local numbers using the same recording, The message tells me there has been fraudulent claims against my social security number. They say that failure to respond will be allowing this fraud to go through or accepting the charges. Then they offer to connect me to an officer if I press "1." I was curious, so I pressed it and heard a voice with an South Indian accent and a busy office sound in the background. The person then asked for personal identity information. When I pointed out that they had called me and ought to know who I was, the person hung up. I don't know how to trace and prosecute these businesses, but please do!

So sick of these scam calls. I block calls every day! The most recent from 313-426-3067, heavy foreign accent asking if a received my new Medicare card.... blah blah blah. I cut him off by saying "if you know anything about our government, they don't make random calls. We the citizens initiate contact. If you have something for me, mail it." I hung up & blocked another number. Ugh.

just received a call from a "John Miller" who provided an ssa badge number to further validate his status with the social security administration. He went on to then tell me that my identity had been stolen by someone using my SSN in Texas. Allegedly a black Toyota Corolla was found with blood and drugs in the car which led to an investigation that took the FBI to El Paso Texas when they stumbled onto a house filled with cocaine. Both the car and the house were purchased in my name using my SSN. The gentleman on the phone provided a case number and claimed charges were being filed against me in the state of Texas. To be honest, I'm not sure if this was legitimate or not, but I hung up nonetheless because it got a little too weird for my liking. Stay alert everyone.

I just got a call from +1 (202) 380-0224. The initial recording said that there was an issue with my SSN and to press 1 to speak with an agent. I opted to speak with an agent just to get a laugh. When I was connected with a real person he cursed me out in a most profane manner.

I received a cell phone call from (864) 704-8781. That is a Spartanburg, SC number. I am in Greenville, SC. The caller ID said it was a "Kevin Powers." The man said he was Jack Lawson with SS Investigation Department. He gave me a badge number of SSA64201. He said my SS # was being used for drug trafficking and money laundering. He asked me to confirm my birthdate. I told him no. I asked who Kevin Powers was and why this call came from Spartanburg. He hung up immediately.

I just got one of these calls.. It was a robo message... The number was 816.963.3000, and is a live number that answers "You have reached the Social Security Office, in Kansas City, MO, Someone has attempted to contact you. This call requires no further action from you. the caller will attempt to contact you later. thank-you. I assume they will try again. I didn't bother calling any of the government numbers to report, as they usually just tell you to call someone else. or they have crazy government hours, so are usually closed when you try to reach them.

I was given the number 877-593-3955 for the Baltimore office to question the status of my application which was submitted three months ago. When I dial this number, nothing happens, no ringtone, nothing. I was given the number by the agent at the toll free number 800-772-1213, since after an hour she could not answer my question about what was causing the delay.
