Did your favorite celebrity reach out to you on social media?

Before you get too excited, are you sure it’s that person? Really sure? We’ve heard reports that scammers, who will try just about anything to separate you from your money, are now posing as celebrities on social media. They’re asking fans to send money for all kinds of supposed reasons – like claiming a prize, donating to a charity, or giving help of some kind. Some celebs do raise money for legitimate causes. But you want to be sure the cause—and the person asking you to support it—are real.

Imposter scams come in many varieties, but they all work the same way: a scammer pretends to be someone you trust to convince you to send them money. And that’s exactly what these celebrity imposters are trying to do.

So what should you do if a celebrity contacts you on social media and asks for money?

  • Slow down. Before you send money, talk with someone you trust.
  • Do some research: search online for the celebrity’s name plus “scam.” Do the same with any charity or cause they’re asking you to support—and learn more about charity scams here.
  • Never send money, gift cards or prepaid debit cards to someone you don’t know or haven’t met – even celebrities you meet on social media.
  • If you sent money to a scammer, contact the company you used to send the money (your bank, wire transfer service, gift card company, or prepaid debit card company). Tell them the transaction was a fraud. Ask the company to reverse the transaction, if it’s possible.
  • Report your experience to the social media site and to the FTC.

That sounds very much line a scan and the reason why I telling you this is because one of my favorite actors supposibly was sending me personal messages takes on instragram for like a week then all the sudden he was asking to donate to his charity, as far as in concerned celebrities are more likey to contact you first throw anything line Twitter insteam or fb asking for money I do truly believes they are imposters I know this because if you look at the account that's being used says private and theres no access in any info proving its them chances are it an imposter.. so sorry you've giving your money to this person they are scammers as far as I concerned anyone who claimed to say they truly love you would not be asking you for money they are just manipuaters. Stop any contact fro him you deserve real loves fron some who doesnt take advantage of you and your kindness

Hi Mdummies6. Which actor messaged you? I had someone pretending to be Jesse Lee Soffer from Chicago PD. I blocked him and he continues to call from other numbers. I blocked all numbers.

Celebrities NEVER ask for money. Don't be fooled. It's a scammer. And why would they reach out to the average Jane doe anyway online? What are you supposed to send? Amazone gift cards? Prepaid debit? Always follow your gut. If something feels off it usually is. Don't believe these parasites.

I am on Instagram. Someone that said they were Kip Moore But spelled it different. (Kipp) they wanted me to send the $800.00 in stream wallet gift cards. I thought that was very odd. I knew it was fake. But the things he said was sweet. I know better. I still have all the texts. So if there is any further information I can help to stop this.

Was it George Strait? I have been contacted by 12 different ones & I hardly think he is duplicating himself!!! I have been able report some & they disappeared from Twitter. But they are clever & create new accounts. I have found at least 3 that are duplicates with different fan club names!! Watch out!!!!

I had a Jon Bon Jovi imposter asking me to send money via PayPal to help a homeless person. That after months of talking. I never believed 100% but being a fan you end up giving the chat a go. After months he started to ask for money to ‘prove’ my love and even after I found out who it was and confronted her she still insisted I was wrong.

I also was contacted by twitter by Jon Bon Jovi scam and was asked to continue conversation over hangouts. Over a month of getting to know each other was suggested a meet and greet through his management. Through that time he told me he was in a loveless marriage and had been searching his whole life for someone who really loved him for himself . He convinced me he had fallen in love with me. When the meet and greet didn’t happen I was told his wife found out and was getting a divorce and all assets where frozen. Needed my help to get his divorce so we could be together. Even though I kept seeing social media of them together he convinced me these where only social obligations he had to do until his divorce was finalized. For a full year every doubt ever question he answered and it seemed logical. I am ashamed to say I feel for it and are out a lot of money trying to help him get his divorce to be with me. But what’s worse is I fell in love with a lie a scam someone pretending to be him. Everything you read on here is how they work and manipulate you by playing on your emotions and desire for it to be real. Don’t fall for it because you’ll only end up with your money stolen and your heart broken.

Same thing happened to me recently. Claiming to be Alexander Dreymon and even insisted for Video call to prove he was not fake. He asked for my number saying so we can exchange messages on WhatsApp app..Seems too good to be true alright and same with you..He Started bluffing and saying he admires me and wanted to be with me .after. While he proposed that he has this investment and he needs some extra money to win this said project..even promising to come over if I donate $3000 dollars.. they're really good into convincing that the are real..I don't even know how he made it so realistic when I saw Alexander Dreymon on video call..(but the video was blurry and I can't hear a word). It didn't stop and keeps on insisting that I send money so he can close the deal. And I almost fell for it..lesson learned.

Thank you so much for posting this, Lori! You have really, really helped my cousin. She is a longtime Bon Jovi fan and had commented on some of his instagram pics and somehow, someone posing as Jon himself contacted her and said all of the right things. This was only about two weeks ago. It was the exact same thing, said they had to switch to Hangouts, the messages were very convincing at first. Then in my opinion, once she was "hooked," they passed her off to someone who spoke much less English because it started sounding like a foreigner talking, and clearly they were setting her up to "help" with a fake charity cause by sending money. The cause was a new orphanage in Turkey. Sent her pics of pitiful children, etc. Thanks again, Lori, for posting this so we could easily identify the same pattern at work. My cousin deleted her Hangout account and is safe now.

I have had contact with a person who claims to know Jon Bon Jovi and a bunch of weird stuff to go along with it has eventually come out however this person first said to me....I have never really been loved for who I am which set off bells with me. I was wondering what email this person was using and if the email has both Jon’s and his wife’s name in it? Thank you!

Just went something so very very similar, in several categories, albeit it was with another 'supposed celebrity' which I won't name at this time! I was also encouraged to download Hangout..... hmm. He wanted to do a video chat to prove it was him. The app has since been deleted from my phone!!! It's sooooo scary at there. Be safe out there everyone!

An imposter is pretending to be Henry Cavill, asking for photos and videos and even voice messages. I suspect the imposter wants photos of the victims to post on onlyfans or other fake profiles. I have a lot of screenshots of WhatsApp and Instagram...

I once received an email stating that they had hacked my webcam and recorded inappropriate videos of me and if i do not pay them via bitcoin they will post the videos online. They even had one of my old passwords- I think I had used it on ebay. So I responded to the email and told them that I do not know how bitcoins work and they should send me their paypal address so I can send money. They never responded. If they did, I would have reported to FTC right away. It is much easier to track such scammers if we have their paypal address.
